Load shedding
Outline:

  • Importance of electricity in our daily life
  • Effects of load shedding on the life of a common man
  • Effects of load shedding on economy and business
  • Why we do not have sufficient supply of power
  • reasons of load shedding in Pakistan
  • How we can overcome this energy crisis

Electric energy is of utmost importance for the survival of modern life. The prosperity of a country is directly linked to the supply of energy electricity is needed in every sector of modern life. The working at railways, hospitals, business centres, entirely depends on electricity. Without electricity, our farms and industry will stop production. Our houses, trade centres, roads, schools and colleges will turn into graveyards. It is unfortunate that the production of such a vital thing is insufficient in Pakistan. The production of electricity is far less than the growing needs of our farms, industries, mills and factories. The population of our country is growing at a very rapid rate. The production of electricity is far less to meet the increasing needs of our future. The result is that we have to resort to load shedding in the country.

The load shedding has affected our country badly. It has disturbed our social, economic and cultural life badly. The industry and business in the country come to a halt during the prolonged hours of load shedding. The hospitals and medical educational centres suffer a lot. The business centres are plunged into darkness. The traffic on roads is disturbed badly. Everything suffers a jolt. The whole stream of life stops. Such a thing is not possible if we have sufficient supply of power.

We do not have sufficient supply of power due to the following reasons. ‘

First: We generate electricity from water, Oil, coal and gas. Water is the cheapest source of producing electricity. We have failed to build Kala Bagh Dam. Had it been built, the power supply would have been in plentiful and at the same time, it would have been cheap.

Second: The electricity generated by coal, gas and oil is very costly. The electricity produced by these elements is called thermal power. The setting up of the thermal power station is highly expensive for a developing country, like ours. The electricity supplied by thermal stations is not affordable for the consumers. It is not even suitable for the competitive industry of the country.

Third: We can produce electricity by nuclear energy. Nuclear power stations are not easy to set up. The nuclear reactors are very costly. The western countries utilise nuclear Energy as a major source of energy. In France, 80% of energy is produced by Nuclear Sectors. This is not possible in Pakistan.

We suffer from the shortage of electricity due to the following reasons also:

A. The demand for electricity increases due to the electrification of Villages. The new housing colonies also need it for domestic use. This has increased the demand of electricity

B. The use of electricity increases in summer. The use of air conditioners is increasing every year. The consumption of electricity increases as compared with its generation.

C. The measures to save energy have badly failed. The business centres, hotels, roads and streets are lite up during night hours. People use electricity as generously as possible. The entire nation suffers from indiscipline. All lights are always “on” in the houses.

We can fight against energy crisis by adopting the following measures.

  1. The generation of electricity can be increased by setting up more power stations. We should build more dams to store water in order to produce electricity at cheap rates.
  2. Nuclear energy should be used as a major source of energy.
  3. The government should undertake research to find ways and means to generate more power from cheap sources. Solar energy can be used as a main source of energy.
  4. A campaign on electronic media should be started to save energy by all means. The masses should be made aware of the true nature of power crisis.
  5. All business centres should be closed after eight o clock at night. Marriages should be held during daytime only. In this way, we can save a lot of energy.

Essay on Pollution(آلودگی)
Outline
1. What is pollution

2. Types of Pollution

3. Causes of Pollution

4. Effects of Pollution

5. Our responsibility

6. Measures to control pollution

7. Conclusion

"Pollution is the forerunner of perdition(تباہی)" (John Trapp)

Pollution is one of the growing challenges facing the world today. Both developed and underdeveloped countries equally share this problem. The developed countries, however, pay attention to prevent it, whereas the developing countries altogether ignore it.

By definition, pollution is the addition of contaminants(آلودگی) in the natural environment. These harmful contaminants disturb the natural balance and cause harmful changes in the lives of living beings particularly humans.
"Pollution should never be the prices of prosperity"-( Al Gore)
Due to excessive industrialization and the use of fossil ( "زمین سے کھود کر  نکالا ہوا)fuels, pollution is rapidly growing. Pollution will become a major threat to the survival of the human race if it is not countered right now.

Environmental scientists divide pollution into three basic types: air pollution, water pollution and soil pollution.

Air pollution is largely caused by the presence of harmful and unhealthy gases in the air. Vehicles and factories release large amounts of poisonous gases into the air. This pollutes the air and makes it harmful for humans to breathe.
"Pollution- if you don't kill it, it will kill you"- (Anonymous)
Since humans breathe air to extract oxygen, air pollution causes breathing diseases. Water pollution occurs when toxic(زہریلا)waste is spilled into streams, rivers and oceans from industries using chemicals.

Soil pollution is caused by the addition of harmful chemicals into the soil like fertilizers and industrial waste. Soil pollution removes the fertility of the soil and adds barrenness to it. As a result, the soil cannot grow crops.

Large-scale deforestation ( جنگلات کی کٹائی)also causes soil pollution. Nearly all the factors causing pollution are rapidly growing and functioning. There are many ways to avoid pollution. Planting the trees is necessary to cope with this challenge.
"The more we pollute the earth the less we deserve to live on earth." - M.M Ildan
Restricting the use of fossil fuels in industries should also be ensured. Factories should be regulated to not dump(ٹھکانے لگانا) their toxic waste into lands and rivers. Awareness campaigns should be initiated to seek the public's help in reducing this.

The environmental crisis should be recognized, addressed and resolved. The education system should teach students with regards to this serious issue. New technologies are needed to be introduced to protect the environment against pollution.

In short, pollution is a serious problem and needs to be solved by using the latest  methods by governments.

My First Day At College

Colleges are places where pebbles are polished and diamonds are dimmed.
After I passed my school examination with good grades I got into a high ranked college in my city. I had heard a lot of stories about college life from my elder sibling and relatives. According to them college is not as strict as school. I was full of excitement, inner joy and high hopes for a promising future. I thought college life would be full of pleasures. After a bad experience of strict discipline at school, I wanted to have a sigh of relief among pleasures of college life. I had already come to know about the frank environment of college. The students play tricks and crack jokes with one another. The lectures had group discussions and research on a topic instead of preparing notes. Besides, there are greater opportunities of extra-curricular activities to search talent. Briefly, it was the charming side of college that I imagined.
Teachers open the door, but you must enter by yourself.
Thinking about this when I entered college, I came across a different world then I imagined. The worthy teachers and other staff members were welcoming the new comers and guiding them to the assembly hall of the college. We were told that on the first day, there would not be any classes for the new comers but the welcome address of the principal. Only the new admitted students were invited to the address and the senior had classes. It was good news for us.

The hall was decorated with pictures of our historical persons, previous principals and some shining stars of the college. There were 1100 students seated. At 10 O’clock, the principal entered the hall. Then, the worthy professors also took their respective seats.

The principal was an aged but healthy man. His face showed strong determination. His strong voice echoed “Assalam-o-Alaikum” in the hall – this marks the beginning of the welcome address.
The principal started explaining the reality and the importance of college experience. His arguments were good and strong. With the help of data, the principal proved that a greater number of college students spoil their lives. He said, “Life is not a bed of roses. You are supposed to work hard”. He was very inspiring and motivating. He told us that college provides opportunity to choose what you want to become in future. College is the place where you will get to know yourself and your potential. It is where you will decide where your future resides.  The Principal changed my concept of pleasures. He explained that pleasure is a small corner in the big room of hard work. “Pleasures refreshes you for hard work and not vice versa”. He surprised me, “If you spoil yourself, you spoil the future of the country”. He told us that college means greater discipline and a sense of responsibility.

The principal’s speech had come to an end but it had transformed my life as I transitioned from a school student to a college students. We were entertained with juice and snacks. While eating, I was thinking about my mistaken conception about college. I was convinced that the college opportunity should not be spoiled.

There is no substitute for hard work.

In the end, it was the first day at college that changed my perspective of college life; I could have carried away easily with the charms of the college life. In just a few moments, I was transformed into a responsible man. I am indebted to the principal for this revolution.

A college education should equip one to entertain three things: a friend, an idea and oneself.

My Favourite Personality or Quaid e Azam
The hero is one who kindles a great light in world who sets to blazes torches in dark streets of life for men to see.
1n 1893, a beautiful boy entered the Lincoln’s Inn, London. He was well groomed and had fair complexion and aquiline features. He had come from India to learn law. Who knew that one day he would develop into the Quaid-e-Azam for the Indian Muslims and liberate them from slavery? He is my only choice as my favourite personality.
All the history is the biography of great man.
Muhammad Ali Jinnah was a great visionary. His vision developed with the passage of time and experience. He had been a great ambassador of the Hindus-Muslim unity at the start. But soon, he realized that the Muslims, under the authority of the Hindus, would be treated like slaves. He had such an ability that he could analyze past and present and map out the future plans sensibly.
Having established this, we can say confidently that he was a leader in the true sense. He was not a follower. He had the ability to instruct and direct people in the right direction. People used to wait for his policy statement and they were never let down by their great leader. Whether it was elections or mass campaign, matters of the Muslim League or communal riots, the Quaid always proved equal to the task. As a leader he knew his goal and he had a plan to achieve it.
Quaid-e-Azam was a superb negotiator. His confidence knew no bounds, but he never became over confident. Therefore, he pleaded the case of the Muslims very diplomatically. His negotiating skills were outstanding during Cabinet Mission Plan, Cripps Proposal and Shimla Conference. During the talks, he never retreated from his stance and finally won Pakistan.
Nature had gifted him with an excellent will power that he used successfully to achieve his goal. Despite his struggle with weak health, Jinnah kept struggling for his aim untiringly. He was so confident and determined that no one could ever waver him in difficulties. He used to preside over meetings, travel a lot, negotiate with his opponents, see visitors and supervise the working of the Muslim League all without complaining.
“The heights by great men reached and kept,
Were not attained by sudden fight.
But they, while their companions slept,
Were toiling upward in the night.”
In the same way, Jinnah was very brave and undaunted. Many a time, his guards suspected a murder attempt and advised him to be careful. But, he did not care for it. One the eve of independence, a British intelligence officer told him about an expected attack on him. He, however, did not give it even the first thought. He accompanied Lord Mountbatten and his cavalcade reached the destination safe and sound.

Of course, he was gifted with a sense of humour. He would comment humorously on various occasions to please his audience. It was never malicious. Even during talks he would not spare a powerful opponent by making witty remarks.
A hero is someone who has given his life to something bigger than himself.
He was a committed and great lawyer. Quaid-e-Azam had such a mastery over law as the judges and his rival attorneys would admire him for it. He would interpret law in a convincing way to win a case.
To conclude, it is difficult to epitomize the personality of my hero so briefly. At home, he was a loving husband, affectionate father and a kind master to servants. Out of home, he was a tough challenger for his opponents. This lawyer did not know that one day he would win the most important case of his life. If he had been on the side of Congress, there would not have been any Pakistan. The Quaid was the only difference and the people who differ write history.
“Strong flowers decay but a great name shall never pass away.

Patriotism
Patriotism means love and regard for the country. It is a natural instinct that men loves the place where he gets birth and where he is brought up. It is one of the noblest passions of human nature. The love of country is natural and essential for every one. Man is a social animal. He cannot live alone. He needs the assistance of other human beings. So the people belonging to one country are brothers and they work for the collective interest of the country. They struggle to flourish their country. The man, who works against the interest of his country, is traitor and he does not deserve any sympathy.
The only way to serve Pakistan is that we must be sincere with out country. We must keep our personal interest behind and we must give supreme importance to the demands of our freedom. Country is not just a piece of land. It is not only the collection of mountains, rivers and valleys. It is the heritage of our dreams, aspirations, culture, traditions and our great religion. We love Pakistan because it is the centre of our hopes and future dreams. It is the land of our following generation. We must try to make it strong and undefeatable castle of Islam.
Patriotism is an active virtue. The real love urges man to do every thing in his power for the welfare of his country. It makes him perform his duties honestly and devotedly. Patriotism makes him a good citizen, who is always ready to serve his nation with best of his talents. A good citizen is always ready to give sacrifices for his nation. Patriotism is a sacred passion, which makes the nation really strong and honorable. It is our duty to keep this passion alive in our hearts.
The great wars of the world were won only because of the extreme sense of Patriotism. Only those nations in the world survive and distinguish themselves, whose citizens keep a high and a very positive sense of Patriotism. Pakistan can become a really strong country, when the people of Pakistan are patriots in the real sense of the world. Give you love to your country and it will give you all the blessings.

The Kashmir Problem
It was decided during the campaign of Pakistan, that the Provinces having Muslim majority should be included in Pakistan. The people of Kashmir were willing to join Pakistan but the Hindu Maharaja GulabSigh did against the wishes of the people. The entire valley of Jammu and Kashmir with its population of 25 Lac was sold by the British to a Dogra Maharaja for Rs 75 Lac. Pakistan took the matter to U.N.O. The United Nations appointed commision for a peaceful settlement of the Kashmir problem. The commission presented two resolutions on August 13, 1948 and January 5, 1949, which were re-accepted by the Indian and Pakistan governments and approved by the Security Council. The main points agreed upon were:
Cease-Fire and the Demarcation of the cease-fire line.
A free and impartial plebiscite in Kashmir under U.N.O.
Withdrawal of forces of both the countries from Kashmir.
After the cease-fire, the Indian forces refused to withdraw from the Kashmir valley. In 1951, Dr. Graham tried to solve the problem but India rejected in February 1953. The Security Council appointed GonarJerring in 1957 but India did not agree to any proposal. At last on August8, 1965, a National Revolutionary Council was formed in occupied Kashmir and the Mujahids stood against Indian forces. India became so desperate and attacked Pakistan. Pakistan Army pushed back the Indian forces in a historical way. In 1971 war, Shimla Agreement was written but India did not agree to liberate Kashmir. Now again the people of Kashmir stood uop against Indian forces and they are fighting for their freedom, which India has to acord them today or tomorrow. In the words of Late General Mohammad Ayub Khan, the Ex-President of Pakistan, Kashmir is a “Time Bomb” which would explode at its proper time and that time, we are sure, has come now. Kashmir is a part and parcel of Pakistan and we can never withdraw from this right.

Duties of Women
Women play a very vital role in human progress and have a significant place in the society. They are not at all inferior to men. They are capable of sharing all the responsibilities of life. Man and woman have been rightly compared to the wheels of the same carriage. Islam has accorded an equal position to women in the society. Islam realized the importance of women and granted them a very dignified position equal to man.
The main responsibility of a woman is to preserve the human race. As a mother, her position is unique. She brings up the children with extreme care. The first school of a child is the lap of his mother. It is quite true that great man had great mothers. Napoleon said:
“Give me good mothers and I will give you a good nation.”
The progress of nation depends upon the way the mothers bring up their children. If the mothers are educated, the whole society will progress. Women have always played an important role in the progress of a nation. In the early days of Islam, women worked side by side with men. In the battlefield, they nursed the injured, kept up the supplies and in certain cases even fought bravely. Florence Nightingale was the woman, who led a very successful campaign for the reforms of hospitals and nursing profession. Women had been great saints, scholars, poets, writers, reformers and administrators.
Women should be given proper education and training. They should known what life is and how it should be lived. Educated women can do much to reform the society. Many disturbances in the society iscreated by those anti-social persons, who were brought up by wrong hands. In modern age, women are going very well in all the fields of progress. They are demonstrating their talents in best. They are serving as teachers, doctors, Engineers, Administrators and even head of the states. The literacy rate among the women so in Pakistan is very low. The need is to increase this ratio. More education among the women means the more progress of the society.

The Responsibilities of an Ideal Student
The purpose of education is to produce ideal persons to face the responsibilities of the future. This aim can be achieved only when the students are sincere and they acquire the education in the real sense. Just copying a few questions and passing the examination is not an education. A student can never be educated until and unless he does not put his heart and should to the cause of education. A student is a person, who devotes himself to the pursuits of knowledge and learning. It is therefore, the first and foremost duty of aj ideal student to seek knowledge. The pursuit of knowledge demands hard work and full devotion. Unfortunately, the students do not realize their duties. They have confined the education. Their greatest purpose is to get good grade in the examination by hook or by crook. They adopt all the foul means to get through the examinations. The ideal student enriches himself with knowledge. In practical life only those students come out with best colours, who had acquire knowledge.
An ideal student enjoys learning. He goes deep and deep in search of the knowledge. He is not a bookworm. He knows that a healthy body is necessary for healthy mind. He takes interest in all the activities that promote his physical health. He goes to the play ground with the same pleasure and enthusiasm with which he studies in the library. An ideal student is not unsocial. He loves his fellow students and takes part in all the collective activities.
The ideal student respects and honours his teachers. He knows the place of teachers, who are opening the gate of glories for him. He is humble and obedient. The more he learns from his teachers, the more grateful he is to them. The more knowledge he gets, the more humble he becomes. An ideal student is not a frog in a well but a person with greater visions and ideals. He is regular and punctual. He does not participate in adverse and negative activities. He confines himself to his studies and task. He does not waste his time in useless deeds. He does not keep association with such elements whose purpose is to damage the cause of education. He believes in simple and plain living. He is kind and generous.

My Aim in Life
Aimless life is certainly a sin. Many people have no definite aim in life. They are like the travelers going a head without any destination. Such people lead an aimless life and what they do in life, is largely a matter of chance, determined by the circumstances in which they happen to be placed. Aimless people do not achieve any thing in life. They just live because they have to live. One should have a definite purpose of life. The people who want success in life, first of all, determine their target. They keep before them their circumstances, their virtuous, their qualities, their talents and their ability to work. They select some definite target of their life and remain successful.
Different people have different aims in life. Some aim at wealth, some at power, some at fame, some at business and some at education and knowledge. My aim is neither wealth nor fame. I wish to serve by country with best of my talent. I love Pakistan and I really believe that every body should think to make it a really great country. I want to become a doctor. It is a noble profession. In medical line, there is much more scope of service. On cen serve the patients every where in the country. This is my personal choice. My parents have compelled me to select it. I wish to become a very successful doctor in future. So I am studying hard to achieve my target. I have keen intrest in medical line, so I do not feel any trouble in strudying at all. After obtaining the medical degree, I plan to work in rural areas where there is much shortage of doctors. My father is well off man and I do not have any financial problem. I do not have the lust of money. I will go to the rural areas and shall help the poor people. I would be best sort of service. This will give me extreme satisfaction and that is the aim of my life.
I know, my profession is very dignified and it will help me to get peace and satisfaction in life. It provides you best chances of service. Sympathy to human being is the sympathy to one own self.

A Cricket Match
Cricket is one of the most popular and exciting out door sports. Some of us get the opportunity to play first class cricket, but there are millions who enjoy seeing it being played. It gives us moments of leisure and pleasure and fills us with a competitive spirit. I witnessed the demonstration of the greatest excitement and determination at National Stadium, Karachi.
It was a fine day. A large number of people including men, women and children from all walks of life gathered there to enjoy the match between Pakistan and New Zealand. To be a good sports team, one has to be aggressive and this was shown in the final between the tw3o teams. New Zealand won the toss and invited Pakistan to bat first. This was a big blunder that their captain had made. Shahid Afridi andSaeed Anwar were sent as openers. It was a right decision by the captain, because Shahid Afridi slammed the ball over the field. It was due to his hard hitting that Pakistan achieved a good start. Saeed Anwar was very careful and most of the time simply obstructed. The bowling was quite strong, due to which Saeed Anwar was not able to score a single run for the first fifteen minutes. But as time passed, he grasped the strategy of the bowlers and began to fully support Afridi. He completed his half-century by playing keen and beautiful shots. When he was at a score of 88, the first slip caught him smartly. In this way, the first wicket of Pakistan fell at a total of 130. After him, Shahid Afridi could not steadily face the bowlers and proceeded towards the pavilion in a short time.
Ejaz Ahmed began his batting when the Pakistani team was playing at 135. Along with Inzamamum ul Haq, he pulled up the score to 170. The next four men were dismissed very quickly – two bowled one caught and one out leg before wickets. However Moin Khan made a stand and was able to increase the score to 218. At this moment, 10 overs remained un bowled and three wickets in hand. Wasim Akramplayed a beautiful inning and Pakistani team snatched a total of 269 for 8.
This terrifying score marked down the morals of the New Zealand Team. They made a poor start, as their first wicket fell when the score was only ten. However, their middle order batsmen made a great effort and cheered the Kiwi Team. Inzamam ul Haq was the person who caught the second middle order batsman at 70. The following batsmen also played quite well and raised up the score to 220 for 5. This situation was exciting and pointed out to the defeat if Pakistan. However, when Wasim Akram came to bowl, the hopes of Pakistanis revived. He bowled extraordinary well and just after 5 overs, the New Zealand team had reached to 260 for 7. The rival needed barely 10 runs to win in 1 over. The down order batsmen shook up well. Score kept on increasing gradually and they reached to 266. It was the last ball; New Zealand requiring 4 runs to win and Waqar Younis was on the other side of the wicket. As soon as he bowled, the wickets were slammed and Pakistan was granted another exciting victory over New Zealand. The crowd went in mad uproar, congratulating their national champions for the great success.

Life in a Big City
Karachi is the biggest city in Pakistan and also one of the most thickly populated cities in the world. Its population has increased rapidly and accordingly has given rise to many social problems. People of this metropolis are becoming more and more concerned about solving these serious problems, some of which are discussed below.
The ever-increasing rush of heavy traffic on the roads is resulting in heavy loss of human life. One day or the other, people suffer form accidents due to reckless driving. Some lose their vehicles and some go to the police. This is due to lack of civic sense in the citizens and violation of traffic rules. Traffic jams, road quarrels, untidiness and damage of public property is also a result of this problem. The government has not done any planning to control this situation in the past two decades.
In the same manner, the government has never emphasized upon population distribution. As a result, slum areas are rapidly being built, where poor labour lives. The disordered development of small houses is spoiling the outlook of the city, as well as creating problems of illegal electric connections, water supply and pollution. The authorities have failed to reclaim the locations from these people.
The academic career of children in Karachi is unpredictable due to lack of good schools and institutions. The need of recreational institutions, parks and play grounds is also felt at times and most of all joblessness creates problems for poor people.
Another problem faced by the citizens of the city is the frequent power breakdowns. Every other day, K.E.S.C cuts down the electric supply without notice. This becomes a great hurdle for industries and professional that use electric machinery for their work. Disturbance and shortage of water supply is also a cause of discomfort among the citizens. Sometimes, the dirty and unfiltered water becomes a major factor in food poisoning, which usually takes place on festive occasions, when demand of water in the city increases. Any measure to improve the supply of filtered water has also not been adopted by the government. Problems due to improper drainage system are also becoming a matter of concern among the people. The alarming in crease in the disorderliness of drainage lines is posing serious threats for people, especially in poor areas. Filth and dirt runs down a channel by the footpath and children play over it. We have malaria, cholera and dysentery still destroying our children because such things exist.
The attitude of beggars in Karachi is the most irritating problem. They are worthless idlers robbing good-natural people. It has become their regular practice to crowd public spots and cheat people. The adverse effects of begging problem are noticeable in sum areas.
There are too many dirty and ownerless dogs roaming about in the streets of Karachi. They spread many diseases and sometime become a danger by injuring people.
Lack of environmental care among people and drivers of public service vehicles is giving rise to pollution problems. Dust fills the air in most of the roads all the time. Improper turned cars fill the atmosphere with deadly smoke at hours of rush, which causes disease among the policemen and common public. The blowing of pressure horns is always there, deafening the ears.
Karachi is also often subjected to terrorist activities. Bomb blasts and firings at public spots are resulting in great loss of human life. The terrorists deserve no less than capital punishment. It is the duty of the police to intensify their investigation to stop such activities.
For the well to do class, life in Karachi may be fascinating, but for other citizens it is a center of drawbacks. It is only through the concentrated efforts of each and every person, including the members of law-enforcing and administrative agencies, can we overcome these serious problems of the metropolis.

Merits and Demerits of Science
Is  Science a blessing or a curse?

As we turn over the pages of history, we come across the development made by man in different walks of life over the centuries. From the primitive Stone Age to the modern computerized era, every step of man has proved to be the milestone in the history of civilization. Modern science has evolved over a long period, and has now reached the peak of success. It has worked wonders in our life, but it cannot be said that it is altogether a blessing. When we look at the other side of the picture, we are filled with a sense of horror. The fear of war and destruction hangs over our heads all the time. In order to understand the creative and destructive aspects of modern science, we stand in need of an analysis that will help us differentiate between the good and the bad.
As we look over the brighter side of the achievements of science, we come to realize that there is hardly any sphere of life that has not been enhanced by the creative abilities of man. In the field of medical science, knowledge and research has gone to such an extent that almost all the ailments have found a cure. The threatening clouds of death no longer haunt the patients who were otherwise filled with despair. Epidemics have been wiped out, nutritional standards have been improved, drug therapy has been recognized and hygienic conditions are being created so that the new generation may enjoy a longer and better life.
In the realm of communication, modern scientific inventions have helped a lot. The far-flung corners of the world have been linked together with a wide spread air network. Distances have lost their meaning and thousands of miles can be covered within hours. Travelling today is not only swift, but also full of pleasure and luxury.
Modern science has opened new vistas of entertainment. All the new electronic gadgets have filled our lives with recreational variety. From the small pocket sized transistor to the big screen television and VCR, we are provided entertainment at home and we owe it all to science. Readers are provided illustrated, colourful books due to the blessing of modern science in the form of latest printing machines and techniques. Such means of entertainment have brought about a change in our habits and hobbies.
The advantages of science are not restricted to the urban population. In the fields of agriculture, forestry and fishery, science has provided the rural population with the latest implements and know-how. The new methods of agriculture have boosted the production of farms and fields. With the use of different kind pesticides, the crops remain undamaged and the tillers of the soil get better return of the labour. This increase in output not only improves the condition of the toiling masses, but also brings about a healthy change in the economy of the country. This keeps on moving the nations on the path of progress and prosperity.
As we cast our eyes on the other side of the picture, we cannot help coming to the conclusion that science is also the monster of death and destruction. Man is selfish and pugnacious by nature. To fulfil his jingoist designs, he stands in need of the most destructive weapons, which could bring about the annihilation of his rivals. Man has gained knowledge in the field of science, but due to lack of wisdom, he is misusing this knowledge. All big nations are thinking of fulfilling the dream of becoming the super power. The wars of today are not limited to the battlefield. It brings about epidemic killing of the civilian population. The knowledge of this domain has added immeasurable danger to war. All the leading powers posses fatal weapons, and it seems that the weaker countries are their mercy. These big nations talk a lot about reduction in arms and they hold disarmament conferences. However, their practice is quite contrary to their preaching.
Science, no doubt provides, new ways of entertainment, but these very means of amusement are bringing a sharp decline in the moral values of the young generation and equally sharp increase in the number of crimes. The TV and video provide entertainment but they quite often become the channels of vulgarity and obscenity. Moreover, new ways of crime are shown to younger people, who adopt the path of getting easy money.
Looking at the two aspects of modern science, we conclude that science by itself is neither good nor bad. It is the will and intentions of man, which makes him, put it to constructive use or take it to the path of devil.

Uses and Abuses of Media/Media and youth/Role of media

Imagine a city without televisions, radios or Internet connections. All these media facilities provide people awareness of what is going on around them. Electronic as well as Print Media is an effective way of communication as it provides link between ordinary persons and others in the world. It is only due to newspapers that we can read in the morning about the events that took place on the other side of the world only the day before. Besides, electronic media can telecast live happenings from around my corner of the world. Radio, Television and Internet are inventions that extend across all areas of internet including weather forecasts, entertainment, educational broadcasts, business and important political and social events. Companies that want to sell their products by advertising also make use of media. Media is very important in the fast moving world, because without media the society would be unaware of the local and foreign affairs.
Now, we come to the drawbacks of media. Electronic media is the most unpredictable mean of spreading knowledge among people. One gets biased and one-sided views through this media and nobody can rely on truth. Internet was supposed to be used for gaining information from throughout the world, but only a fraction uses it for information. Rests are being morally devaluated through the improper and non-religious publishing. Print media is also playing its role in this regard. Fashion and Movie Magazines are the main cause of wastage of money and every amidst the young generation. If a newspaper can be used, it can be misused much easily by spreading views of one political party and other rumours. Readers should be careful and judicious in selecting the type of media so that they may keep away from its harms.

Memorable Day in My Life/Unforgettable Day in my life

It was the 27th day of July and the last day of competition I had participated in the All Pakistan Software competition. I read the advertisement in the newspaper three months ago, in which software programmers were invited to send in their software for the competition. I worked hard for about one month and made the software, which was then selected by the panel of judges and I was invited to participate in the event. Now, after three restless days, the event was coming to an end. But, there was a closing ceremony to come, in which the best programmers were to be awarded prizes.
I had been waiting for the day with anxiety and curiosity. I got up early in the morning and prayed to God to grant me success. I was rather uneasy and restless. My mind was swinging between expectation and apprehension. It was an inexplicable situation of uneasiness and anticipation. I was not sure about what to expect. My parents and friends had high expectations of me. At one moment, I though that I would win but again I feared if I do not. I knew that there is always an element of chance, how good one may be. I was in a very disturbed state of mind.
The closing ceremony was yet to commence. The sand of time was running out. I was getting more and more restless. At last, I reached the exhibition hall and found my seat amidst the participants. The ceremony started with the speech of the organizing committee and then that of the chief guest. They all emphasized on the importance of software development in the country and measures for its promotions. Finally, the judges were invited to the dais to announce the best programmers of the competition. At once, absolute silence covered the audience. At the moment, I still remember that my legs were trembling and heart throbbing. In less than a minute, the judge announced the name of the person who had won First Prize in the big event – and that was me! I was filled with a feeling of greatest joy and excitement. I thanked God and ran to the stage with every body congratulating me. The chief Guest handed me the winning shield. I was requested to express a few words about my success. That was a speechless moment. Filled with emotions and in high spirits, I thanked God, my parents and all my friends who had helped me in my achievement.
When I reached home, my parents were exhilarated with delight and joy as I gave them the good news. My siblings rejoiced my remarkable attainment. When I informed my friends and relatives them came to congratulate me. Tea and sweets were served to all. Every body was in a jolly and happy mood. My mother prepared pleasant edibles for lunch and we dined altogether. Never before was I so happy.
In the evening, many other relatives and friends came to congratulate me. My father welcomed them cordially and thanked them for their kind visits. We passed the whole day cheerfully. In fact, it was the happiest day of my life, which I shall remember for many years to come.

I am indebted to the principal for this revolution
A college education should equip one to entertain three things: a friend, an idea and oneself.

My Last Day At College
Friends depart and memory takes them to her caverns, pure and deep. (Thomas Haynes)
Tears trickle down my cheeks as I remember my last day in my college. It was the day of parting and parting in life is painful. I can never forget that day when I left college and entered professional life. It was a golden period of my life. But the golden period passed away like a happy dream.

Tears from the depth of some divine despair, Rise in the heart and gather to eyes. In looking on the happy autumn fields. And thinking of the days that are no more. (Tennyson)
My last day at college is still fresh in my memory. It was a day of mixed joy and sorrow. The principal was addressing a big audience. Some attentive students were listening to and clapping whenever the speaker made such a point. Some naughty ones were whispering and passing funny remarks over the speech. This is typical college student character.
The music in my heart I bore long after it was heard no more. (Wordsworth)
Earlier, some students staged a show – which included comic skits dance and music performance. All the performers had shown great artistic skill in each performance. They showed that education does not mean cramming of books only. It includes publishing one’s talent and enabling one to be a useful citizen.
When the speech ended the students rushed to the dining hall. An appetizing meal was waiting for us. Some of us pounced upon the dishes whereas others showed a good control. I was hearing the noise of plates, spoons and glasses etc. When the lunch was over, a new announcement was made which surprised us. A function on the last day is very typical – a variety show, principal’s address and a punch. But this was more than that which made it memorable and quite unique. It was a career guidance session.

The senior professors sat in a row on the stage and spoke on engineering, medical, arts and business administration. No doubt we knew about them but our information was very superficial. Besides, many of us had various misconceptions also. The worthy professors invited questions from the audience. Each student wanted to ask questions which were not possible because of the shortage of time. However, they collected some sample questions and answered them thoroughly.
They had obtained prospectuses from various engineering institutions, medical colleges, universities and commerce institutions. It was a great effort. We could go through a prospectus of our choice and gather a fair idea about the scheme of studies and the institution itself. After spending a good long time in session, we returned home. I call it a day.
There are more men ennobled by study than by nature. (Cicero)
In the end, the function proved to be a stepping stone for us. We had come with a misconception of eating and enjoying only. But our college administration had turned it into a unique purpose oriented one. To guide and lead someone in the right direction is a great virtue, and our college had just done the same. The last day at college had become the first day for another institution for us. My last day at college made me realize that.
Heavy hearts, like heavy clouds in the sky, are best relieved by the letting of water. (Revarol)

Rainy Day
Rain is an amazing natural phenomenon which has been there since the life came into existence on earth. Water vapors which evaporate constantly result in the formation of clouds. When the clouds get concentrated with water they result in precipitation. This cycle repeats itself again and again and the water bodies of Earth remain flowing with water never gets emptied.
"Rain is grace; rain is the sky condescending to the Earth. Without rain there would be no life."
Rain is very beautiful and healing. It soothes the spirit and washes away all that is bad. Rain is much more than the people give credit to. It is a life giver, a life saver. It fills the rivers, fuels the streams and enters the ocean in waves. It is fascinating, nurturing magical and calming.
"Rain, whose soft architectural hands have power to cut stones, and chisel to shape of grandeur the very mountains?"
Rain is indeed a great blessing of God. It is a marvelous gift after the unduly long and extremely hot summer season. The scorching sun and unbearable heat is washed away by the rain water. Rain no doubt is a source of life. Water is the sign of life. Rain provides water to all living things plants, animals, humans and even insects. It is a nature of life and life can never exist in its absence.
"Rain showers my spirit and waters my soul"
Everything that has an advantage has a drawback. Rain which can provide existence and subsistence can also cause mayhem. In contrast to the fact that rain is a life giver it is also cause of chaos and destruction. Rain can destroy accommodations, fields, crops and shelters. It can result in devastating floods, hurricanes and storms. It can wipe away anything that comes in its way. It can be a blessing as well as a curse.
"Some people feel the rain others just get wet."
It was an average sizzling and burning day of July. Everyone was exhausted, tired and worn out due to the intense heat. The sky was brilliant blue due the ever bright sun. There were no signs of clouds or shade. The garden blazing sunlight had heated up everything. The plants were dried and drooped as the heat had sucked all the life from them. Heat was steaming out of everything. The animals had all lied down, nearly fainted. The temperature was baking and the hot air was blistering.
All of a sudden the clouds started gathering in the sky. The golden sunlight disappeared and everything became silvery grey. The sky turned into a shade of purple and blue. Vivid flasher of lightning appeared which were followed by the roaring sound of the' thunder and it started raining abruptly.
"Anyone who says sunshine brings happiness has never danced in rain"
The sound of the downpour was pleasing to the ears. Everything came into life once again. The water washed the signs of heat and warmth. The plants that seemed lifeless and inert were dancing in the rain. Their leaves turned into the most radiant shades of green. Everyone was glad and delighted. All the sorrows and sadness faded away. The rain was completely unexpected but no one minded the inconvenience in the absence of umbrellas. Soaked clothes and wet shoes didn't bother anyone. The rain had brought happiness to the heat stricken people.
"The best thing one can do when it’s raining is to let it rain"
The street urchins were having a great time. Children were playing in the streets, floating boats on the sides of roads where the water was flowing fast. In no time, the whole city was drenched in rain water.
The roads and streets became lakes and streams. Everything looked shiny and brilliant. Everyone was enjoying every drop of the rain. Gradually it started raining cats and dogs but the beautiful scene that the nature had created was breathless.
"One touch of nature maketh the whole world kin" – (Shakespeare)
“Nature like man sometimes weeps for gladness” (Disraeli)
“The rain in the burning heat of summer is a blessing of God”
“The best part of the beauty is that which no picture can describe”
“He send rain on the just and the unjust” (New-Testament)
“The daily showers rejoice the thirsty earth, and bless the flowery buds”

I was peeping out of the window, observing the marvelous and majestic rainfall. I was listening to the crickets chirp and the frogs croak. The rain continued for an hour or two and then the sky became clear-again. The birds came out of their nest and the animals out of their shelter.
“Rain showers my spirit and waters my soul”
Everything was shiny and crystal clear. Then out of nowhere, the stunning miraculous and awe inspiring rainbow appeared in the sky. It was like someone had painted an arc of seven brilliant colors in the sky. The sight was magical.
"The Rainbow gave thee birth and left thee all her lovely hues"
My dad called everyone in the lounge. He had planned for a picnic. We all became very excited. We started packing everything we needed. My mother baked some cookies, cakes, biscuits. In no time, we were ready and set out in the car. We also bought some fast food on our way to the park. The park was crowded with families. Children were playing in the puddles and swinging on the swings. We found a dry spot and sat down. We took a lot of pictures. Played with each other and ate the delicious food joyfully. We enjoyed ourselves, and spent the day with full zest and zeal because we all know that it does not rain everyday and every day is not a rainy day.
“After rain cometh fair weather”

A Road Accident
"An accident is something that happens unexpectedly to hurt a person."

Accidents are so common these days that we seldom pay attention to them. Almost every day, there is more than one news about accidents taking place in different parts of the country. In Pakistan the number of accidents that are daily reported in press or on T.V and radio, is enough to convince us that our roads have become veritable death trap for us. When we venture to step out of our houses, we are not sure whether, we will be able to reach our destination safely or not.

Most of the accidents are caused by negligence of traffic rules, carelessness of drivers, love for over speeding and narrowness of roads. Here I shall describe a breath taking accident, which I saw last year.
Last year, we all were going to Multan by road. There was a great traffic on Highway and all were in a great hurry. My father was going on with a normal speed. Suddenly, a bus overtook our car with a great speed. The bus was overloaded with passengers. After a few minutes, another fast moving bus overtook our car. The situation of passengers was not different from the first one. The bus was an old model also.

We had not traveled far when we saw both the buses on the road moving in a great speed. It seemed that they were racing together. Their speed was very dangerous. Suddenly, one bus overtook the other one. This engaged the bus driver and he accelerated speed of bus to go ahead. In the meanwhile, the tie road of that bus gave way since, it was moving at a top speed, and it soon went out and slipped to the left side of the road.

Other bus kept on moving. The whole traffic on the road stopped immediately. But the bus was out of control. It had a head on collision against a tree, which was uprooted by the bus. The bus went deep into the thick growth of before it came to a stop.

There was a great hue and cry raised by the passengers. The bus received such terrible jolts that almost all passengers were thrown away from their seats. Almost every passenger was injured. Some of them were very seriously injured especially the bus driver and front seated passengers.
Soon the help arrived there. Injured were taken to the hospital and first aid was given. The traffic continued after a half an hour. And we went ahead.

I still remember this incident and feel sorry, that just for the sake of entertainment; these bus drivers put the lives of many passengers in danger. This should be avoided although:

"Death keeps no calendar."

But we should save the gift of God Life and should not become enemy of it.

A Railway Station
The train drawn by the heavy engine would stop briefly for the passengers at places called railway stations. The British invented the railway and the locomotive. The rain - track was laid for the trains to connect different towns and villages on the route.

People come to the railway station to leave their dears, but some people come to receive their dears. The people who leave their dears they become sad and who receive their dears they become happy. Therefore,

"The railway station is a place which presents a blend of feeling of sorrows and joys”.

Last Sunday I went to the railway station with my father. He has a job there. I saw typical scenes there. The smart, uniformed station master and his staff hurriedly move - about when some train is due in or out. The platform is thronged with passengers, men, women and children. Some stay close to their piles of luggage, other just walk about looking at colorful ads. The vendors do roaring business. Their brightly lit stalls or barrows at different point attract the passengers. There is noise and clamor all around.

"A railway station obviously has typical scenes"

Meals, fruits, goal gappas, pakoras, books, magazines, souvenirs and knick - knacks sell like hot cakes. In summer, pitchers and fans are in great demand. Water coolers and taps were the busiest spots. There was a great crowd.

"The prospect of long arduous journey ahead worries the passengers"

Such a bustle follows, when the train pulls in at the platform. Some people pick their way politely along the crowded platform while others bump into one another as they got hurriedly from one compartment to another. Within a few minutes, the train is fully packed. The guard waves a green flag. The engine whistles and the train steams off. Soon the train picks up speed and is out of sight. The train is gone, the station staff has returned to their offices and now there is all calm and quiet at the railway station. Such are some of the scenes at the Railway Station.

Because of the different scenes of railway station we can say that:
"The Railway Station is A Place of Great Interest"

A Visit to a Hill Station

"The best part of the beauty is that which no picture can describe".

My love of adventure is natural to me of course; the degree of love varies from person to person. My adventuresome one nature promoted me and a cousin of mine suggested visiting Murree Hills. Murree, a beautiful valley situated between the huge mountains of Himalaya range.

It was almost mid of July when we all cousins left for Murree. We enjoyed the whole journey from Lahore to Rawalpindi. We reached Rawalpindi at 10 o' clock. We rested for a while in Rawalpindi and purchased many things of daily needs.

We reached Murree at 2 p.m. the same day. The weather was gusty and dusty. The huge masses of clouds appeared in the winking of an eye. An inky darkness prevails everywhere. Cool wind was blowing Birds were diving up and down on the waves of cool breeze. And at that time, it seemed as if:

"Nature is standing in front of us in all its beauty and grace".

We put up at an old hotel "Sunny View". After having rested there for a while, we came out to have a view of Murree hills. The valley below hills looked like a great cup full of flowers and flowing streams. The beautiful flowers of eye catching colors were dancing in cool breeze and looking so beautiful, as the poet says;

"See how the flowers as at parade, under colors stand displayed."

Next day, we walked to Kashmir point and enjoyed ourselves with its scenic beauty. When it was dark, we made for our hotel. A gentle shower of rain began to fall. When it started-tipping it down, it also created a musical sound and that was the beauty and music of nature. After a while, it started raining cats and dogs and continued till late at night, but when it was dawn, the rain stopped.

After our breakfast, we went out to see Salami Sanatorium. Salami is a beautiful spot situated in a fine valley. There are fruit garden on slopes. On our way back, we crossed two fast moving streams. Their silvery water was clear and cool. The number of glowing colors looked as much beautiful as:

"The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with heart." (Helen Keller)

Next day, we went to Patriata, early in the morning. We enjoyed having a ride of chair-lift. It was an interesting ‘experience. Running clouds, blowing breeze and bird eye view of Murree Hills. It seemed like a dream.

In our ten days visit of Murree Hills, we enjoyed hiking, and did a lot of shopping from Murree Mall. These moments are unforgettable for me. Those days were most well-spent days of my life.

Beauty of Murree Hills left a lasting imprint on screen of my mind. It will be commemorating me of the switching beauty of Murree forever, because;

Libraries

“Libraries were full of ideas–perhaps the most dangerous and powerful of all weapons.”

“Whatever the cost of our libraries, the price is cheap compared to that of an ignorant nation.”

“In a good book room you feel in some mysterious way that you are absorbing the wisdom contained in all

the books through your skin, without even opening them.”― Mark Twain

“To add a library to a house is to give that house a soul.”― Cicero

“Libraries are our friends.”

“When I got [my] library card, that was when my life began.”― Rita Mae Brown

“What in the world would we do without our libraries?”― Katharine Hepburn

“A library is not a luxury but one of the necessities of life”.

A Library is a heaven for a student, a teacher and of course for all those who are fond of reading even it be only just for the sake of reading. Some people are so fond of reading even when they do not have to enter any examination or competition that, they continue to read, and it is these people who also become and remain members of a library.

This is the place where one can get unlimited stocks of books on any and every subject that may be of interest or need for an individual. A library is the place where one can spend hours of time fruitfully and filled with interest. One can learn so much by reading books authored by eminent writers and thus become knowledgeable.

This is one place of absolute silence, concentration even though it is open to the general public. Isn't it just one conceivable place where so many people can be seen yet, such silence can also be enjoyed, peculiar isn't it? How can so many people sitting together remain quiet?

This is the magic of a unique place that is - a library. This is because, the very ethics of entering a library is basically, the understanding of every individual entering - to keep quiet, and maintain the silent sanctity of the place.

We find several libraries that have memberships that are open to the general public - to name a few in Delhi are, the USIS Library, the British Council Library, the Spare House Library, and the huge Public Library.

Besides these big public libraries, we find libraries in all schools, colleges, which of course cater only to the needs of their own children.

Besides, no outsider is ever allowed in any of the Libraries of Institutions. The libraries of schools and colleges keep books that are relevant to the subjects taught in their institutions, together with an assortment of other General Knowledge books and magazines.

With these numbers of books, the students are able to get all knowledge of their subjects plus general information which keeps them informed and up to date.

A library is thus a storehouse of knowledge open for all to take advantage and touch the horizons of knowledge. These are the places that carve out brilliant students, the higher rungs of bureaucracy, and the technical biggies. Thus it is here, that all that is known in the world of the elite is produced and nurtured.

Every individual big and small must develop the habit of reading, just for fun, and to gain knowledge, may be not only for exams. This is because, in the first place, reading is a good habit, and a book the best friend, and secondly, a voracious reader always scores better than his counterpart who does not read enough.

This habit of reading can be developed only if we get into the habit of going to a library regularly, and spending a lot of time there. That is the place that provides just the right atmosphere necessary for studies, and assimilating and retaining all the knowledge taken it. The environment in a library is ideal for the intellectual growth of individuals.

The habit of reading can be developed in younger days when we are children. So, it is my earnest suggestion to all students to develop the habit of reading, which in turn can be best achieved in a library.

In order to retain the habit of reading when we grow up is, to become a member of any good library, and then, to make it a routine in the daily plan to visit the library for at least some time out of the busy schedules.

Reading is the best hobby we can develop, and the best companion to spend time. A library is the ideal place, and reading an ideal pastime.

My Best friend
Friendship, a peculiar boon of Heaven, the noble minds delight and pride, to men and angels only given, to all the lower world denied.

Friendship is a great blessing. A man who has sincere and selfless friends is very lucky. Friendship, in fact, is a source through which one gets inspiration and wisdom to live one's life in a better way. A friend is not the person to exploit other's weakness. He is benefactor. A friend in need is not a friend indeed. A Sanskrit verse says.

Six folds are the characteristics of the friends; he gives and receives, presents, confides and is entrusted with secrets, entertains and is entertained at feasts.

1 am a student of Matric class up to this stage of my life, 1 have come in contact with many a girl of my age, but none of them proved worthy of being a good friend. Many of them were quite attractive and engaging but they parted at an early stage of friendship.

Recently, I have found a friend in the person of a girl. She is not only my class fellow but also my neighbor. Her father is a lecturer in English in Government College. She has a fair complexion and sharp features. She has dark brown eyes and curly brown hairs. She possesses a cheerful deposition. A personally smile always play upon her face.

She is sincere and honest. She is kind and generous. She is always well dressed.
She is neat and clean in her habits also. She does not mix with bad class fellows and avoids their company. She has a sound health, and she is intelligent as well.
She is very hardworking and helps me a lot. She is very curious and wants to go deep into every matter. She never abuses and never quarrels. She has cool head Gardening is her hobby. She is always helpful to the weak students.

She is a Very good student. She wants to become doctor. Teachers are all praise for her. Her father is also a source of encouragement for her. She is trying to get best grades in coming Matric Examination.

But all this does not means that she is a book worm. She takes part in school activities. She is an active student of school. She is an impressive debater. She speaks with confidence. She is a very good painter. Not only this, she is a very good player of Tennis. She plays very well and has won many prizes in Tennis tournaments.

These are all her apparent qualities. But in fact she has a golden heart. She loves everyone. She is very kind to the poor and younger ones. She always respects her elders and teachers.

A friendship needs the basis of mutual understanding and that we have given. Given proper nourishment, a friendship such ours can prove a boon for society. In my view.

"Individual friendship should pang the way for friendships at large.

Television
Television is one of the greatest wonders of modern science. Modern science has invented many valuable things, but there is nothing which has contributed so much to our joy of life as the television. If the men of last century could rise from their graves, it is certain they would be speechless on watching the television.

The Government of Pakistan established the Television Corporation in October 1964. Its aim was to introduce a general purpose of television service in the country. The first television station in our country was set up at Lahore. Now we have television stations at Quetta, Peshawar, Islamabad and Karachi. We can now watch moving, talking and living pictures on the screen. We need not go to playground to enjoy a match; we can enjoy it in our drawing room along with our family.

Television is an important means of entertainment, education, communication, information, cartoons, quiz programs etc. Indeed, Mankind should be grateful to J.L. Baird who was the inventor of the television. The cinema, the stage and the club are the recognized places for recreation but they become stale and dull after a time. A television is such a means of entertainment as it never makes us feel dull, for we have the whole world before our eyes to see and enjoy.

Now we can enjoy films, dramas, cartoons, etc. while sitting in our own house among the members of the family. We can watch and hear the talks delivered by the scholars, scientists, politicians, poets, writers, artists, musicians and other eminent persons. We get much to know from their talks and lectures and various subjects and topics.

Television is playing an important role in the field of education. It telecasts educational programs for the benefit of school and college students. Special programs for students are telecast during the days of examination. Students can watch the actual performance of a complicated experiment or operation on the television.

Pakistan is an agricultural country and 80 percent of its population lives in villages. Special agricultural programs are relayed on television for the farmers. These programs enable them to increase their agricultural production and inspire them how they can add to their income by taking to poultry or fishery in their spare time. A weather forecast is given for information and guidance of the farmers in every News Bulletin.

The television has certain abuses also. It affects eyesight provided that the viewers may sit at a safe distance from it. Especially, children don't care of it and they are affected from the harmful rays of television. If a person wastes all his time in watching television, he will become lazy and unpractical. Long duration programs on television, like films, deviate a student's attention from his studies. He becomes idle and day-dreamer. The cost of electricity is influenced too, of course.

In Pakistan, much may be done through television. Our villagers may be told how to improve their methods of cultivation and what the world is like of which they know very little. Our women also may be taught cooking, sewing, etc., through the television. The television would be a powerful weapon of social reforms, and political awakening.

Television Alternative

“Television enables you to be entertained in your home by people you wouldn’t have in your home”.
An appeal to the eye is always greater than an appeal to the ear. Television is one of the greatest inventions of our age. It is derived from a Latin word meaning “to see from a distance.” It has been a powerful means of propaganda. It has got a wide spread popularity since its origin. Nowadays, it has become an indispensable part of our life. In free time, everyone likes to sir around it for entertainment and information. In this age of tension and depression, the role of television has become very critical. It eases one’s tensions and makes one forget one’s worries for the time being.

Television is of immense importance in this modern world. It is the best source of domestic recreation. We can enjoy the dramas, live concerts, movies, games and matches played fields by sitting in our room. Moreover, there are special programmes telecast for every age and group of people they are children or housewives, farmers or soldiers, professional men or women. Everyone has got a fair share of his own in the programmes

Television is undoubtedly a reliable source of information. Sitting in our own rooms, we can learn and watch the occurrences happenings at thousands of miles away. It gives information about the events unfolding in political, social, scientific, economic and industrial worlds with in depth analysis.
Moreover, television has rendered a useful service in the fields of education and research. It has also become a useful mean of instruction in science and technology. Medical students can watch complicated operations live from the operation theatres. Programmes relating to every department of education and life are displayed for the guidance and assistance of the people. Farmers are informed about the latest fertilizers, new seeds, processes to preserve fruit and vegetables, and methods of rapid growth of crops. Announcements are made to warn people against and critical situation or imminent danger. So we can say that television has become an indispensible part of human life because it covers all those areas that interest and govern human life and behavior.

Television has its disadvantages too. The attractive and glamorous life of artists and the allurement of romance shown in certain plays involve people in daydreaming. They want to become rich and attractive overnight. They are not ready to face and fight the bitter realities of today’s life. It makes us either victims of laziness and inertia or involves us in a blind race for money and fame because it is often said that “Television is the chewing gum for eyes”. The situation has grown from bad to worse with the arrival of Cable. The entire nation has dived downward into the ocean of moral degradation. People taking part in physical activities and pondering over the mysteries of the universe are no where to be seen. People do not like studying books: as much of their time is spent in watching different television programmes.
The above mentioned situation is worsened by the misleading advertisements. People are persuaded to but more and more new things and it has resulted in creating a buying-lust among them. The others who cannot afford to buy such costly things become victims of inferiority complex. This situation has resulted in widening the gap between the poor and the rich.
On the whole, we can say that television is a great invention of men. Its dangers and disadvantages can be controlled by adopting better policies not only by the authorities but by the people themselves. People should keep in mind that excess of everything is bad. If it is used with caution and care, it can become a useful tool of education, information and entertainment.
“The mind is its own place, and in itself
Can make a heaven of hell; hell of heaven.” (Milton)

A Hockey Match

A hockey match played between two strong teams is really a thrilling experience. Last Sunday, I enjoyed an exciting match between our College Eleven and the City Raiders. It was played in our ground and a large number of spectators came to see the game. Our team had recently won the board zonal championship and was naturally considered to be a strong combination, the City Raiders, too, was experienced players and had already played in many tournaments. The spectators expected to see a very interesting game.

At exactly 4:00 p.m. the referee blew a long whistle and the players who had taken up their positions in the filed looked towards the center forwards who quickly leapt into action.

Our center forward Niaz pushed the ball towards the Raider's goal and the next moment he was running after it. It happened so swiftly that the Raiders could not move before he had reached the 'D\ The goal keeper tried his best but he was too late; Niaz had hit the ball right into the goal. We went mad with joy. We shouted and clapped and whistled and our players waved to us.

The game started again. Raiders were more vigilant this time. Their center forward managed to beat ours, and passed the ball to his right in who passed it back to him. He dribbled it past our defenders and reached to goal mouth but our goal keeper stopped the ball and sent it flying back: The ball was now with our players who were working very hard.

After a short time, our captain got the ball and raced down to the goal post. When he reached the 'D' he slipped and fell down. The Raiders got the ball and once again raided our goal our defenders fought back valiantly and repulsed every attack. At this point, the referee blew a long whistle and the players walked out of the ground, for it was 'half time'. The players went to the dressing room and had soft drinks and biscuits.

After the interval, the game became very tense. The Raiders played a better game; most of-the time the ball remained in our half. Time and again, the Raiders’ captain who was in terrific form REACHED our goal. But every time our goal keeper stood his ground and cleared the ball.

At last, the time was up and our team came out happy and victorious. They had won the match by one goal. We clapped and shouted with joy. Our players had not let us down.

Sports and Games
Sports and games are essential for health. They play an important role in the lives of young men and women. Games help to channelize the energies of the youth in constructive channels. The aim of education is the overall development of the personality of man. It means the development of not only the mind but also the body. It is a common saying, "A sound body has a sound mind”. Sports and games enable people to remain healthy and fit. They inculcate among the people a sense of discipline. They create a spirit of healthy competition. They keep the body fit. The best way to keep the limbs fit is to exercise them in sports and games of physical skill and strength.

It is good that our educational institutions encourage sports and games by organizing matches and awarding prizes and trophies. A number of schools, clubs and societies hold athletics contests. They include walking, jogging, jumping; swimming, rowing, boxing, wrestling. An athlete is trained to be fit to engage in such contests. That is why sports and games are becoming very popular in our schools and colleges. Our students take an active "part in all kinds of sports and games, because they know that "All work and no play make jack a dull boy". In this way they keep themselves healthy and fit. A player becomes a man of principle. He respects the rules of the games he plays. He leads a disciplined life. He possesses the virtues of patriotism, and loyalty to the nation. But the facilities of course, are not adequate at present. In spite of this, our school boys and girls know that their growing bodies need-regular physical exercise to keep themselves healthy and fit.

According to Hazrat Ali, the forth caliph of Islam:
"A healthy mind can realize God"

Sports and games help us to keep our body active and vigorous. They enable us to face the dangers boldly. They divert our minds form the daily routine of life. When we play games, we forget all our worries-and anxieties; they provide us with recreation and enjoyment. Games like cricket, hockey and football are very popular in our country. They inspire the spirit of team work. The discipline that is gained in playing up games is invaluable; games cannot only bring a good name to the country but also foreign exchange.

"Games and sports widen the mental horizon of players and make them true followers of the rule of law"

It is therefore, necessary that our Government should work out a long term national sports policy. The students should be taught the advantages of games in the school itself. Various games and sports should also be popularized and encouraged in rural areas of our country because nearly 64% percent population of our country lives in villages. The villagers possess better health than the city dwellers, by holding sports' and games in villages; we can produce many sportsmen of international level. Sportsmen and sportswomen should be given honor and big monetary incentives to encourage them.

"Games and sports develop character and give health which are quite essential for improving the quality of life, acquiring wealth and success"

Health
Health is a great blessing of Allah Almighty and is very precious. It is the ability of the human body to meet demands imposed by the environment and daily life. It is an old saying that Health is Wealth. But actually health is for preferable to wealth. Much pleasure and happiness is possible having health but not wealth, but really bad health destroys all possibility of enjoying one's wealth. Even then millions of people destroy their health in the pursuit of wealth and it is very strange.

Health helps to develop a positive and dynamic attitude in life. Balanced diet, hygienic environment, personal dream lines and physical exercise are conducive to health. As much of our happiness and success in life depends on our health. So it is our duty to maintain it at all cost. Keeping oneself healthy and smart is an art and this art demands balanced diet. Our bodies lose their vigor and vitality if they are not supplied with the proper amount and kind of food. Nowadays our, society is busy and on the go at all times. It is so much easier to stop and get fast food and then continue on. But studies have shown that those who eat hurriedly fall a victim to indigestion, raised cholesterol level and other disorders. Moreover smoking and use of drugs are likely to seriously damage one's health. They affect judgment and other reflexes.

Regular exercise is as important as balanced nutrition. A person who exercises regularly enjoys good night sleep, a good appetite and a sense of well being throughout the day. Exercise keeps our spirits up whenever dealing with depression and allows us to have a relaxed life style. Walking is one of the most effective forms of exercise and can be included in everyday life swimming; cycling and skating are also very helpful. Lack of exercise results in flabby muscles and general physical weakness.

It is an established fact that personal hygiene and health are inseparable. Islam, being the most scientific and natural religion lays great stress on cleanliness and in maintenance of healthy body.

 The Holy Prophet (PBUH) says:
"Cleanliness is half the faith"

So it is our religious obligation to keep the environment hygienic to save all sorts of diseases. Neat and clean environment has. a cheerful effect. It is a sure sign of civilization and guarantees healthy society.
Proper sleep is a key to maintain good health. It is an old saying;

"Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man health wealthy and wise"

Early rising is a good habit. An early rises enjoys good and sound health and works carefully, steadily and thoroughly. Moreover, he is always happy, fresh and smart, whereas a late riser finds his works dull and dry and does unwillingly. The golden principal of "Early to bed and early to rise" is especially necessary for young people who are still growing-late hours are bad for them.

It is the human nature that he wants change. Sometimes staying at one place makes us weary and stale. It is a signal that we need a complete change in our environment. If we go to some other place at the hills or in the country side it does us a world of good-change in routine and fresh air are better than all the tonics in the world.

Since health is so important to us, people are rearranging their lifestyles and their priorities to gain or maintain it. Some endure great pain for health some sacrifice their wealth for it; some believe and act upon the strangest things in the hopes of obtaining it; some even kill themselves because they cannot get it. Finding death preferable to living without it. Such a coveted blessing must be maintained to enjoy life.

Boy Scouts

Boy Scout is a member of the Boy Scouts, and international movement whose objectives are to develop character, physical fitness and citizenship of boys. They are trained for the responsibilities of adult life after through community and outdoor activities. Sir Robert Bader Powell, a British soldier, started his movement in 1908 in England. Scouting spread very, fast because of its simple and noble objectives. Now it exists in more than 140 countries. International rallies called jamborees are held after every four years.

The boy scouts organization encourages boys to participate in vigorous outdoor activities. Camping is a regular part of the scout programmed. The program also stresses the development of skill in woodcraft, swimming, first aid, signaling and other activities. Scouts are trained in First Aids, cycling, swimming, cooking, and extinguishing fire and other useful practical arts. They are also taught how to put up tents, make rope bridges and raise a flag. The boy scouts motto is "Be prepared" and the slogan is "do a good turn daily".

A boy scout takes an oath first. He tries to hold fast to his noble promise under all moral values and he fulfills his duties to God Almighty, to his country and to the suffering people. He is very eager to help the injured, the needy and the handicapped. He knows that a cheery smile and a helping hand can make life easier for others.

Moreover, a boy scout has qualities of leadership. He is firm and noble in command. He is humble and willing in obedience. He learns useful crafts and skills. He knows basic facts about trees, hills, rivers and stars. He is efficient in using a knife and axe, in trying various knots, in cooking food and in pitching a tent. In peace and emergencies a boy scout shows courage, responsibility and self-confidence.

The Boy Scouts grow into loyal and useful citizens. They are trained in habits of obedience, cleanliness and truthfulness. They are taught to be always active and ready for any useful service which may be required of them, and for which they may be fit. All scouts are equal, and are brothers and have to take a pledge before they become a scout to obey a scout law, and to be loyal to the country. A Scout's word is always to be believed.

A Scout looks very smart in his uniform. He always carries a rope and a handkerchief and a long stick is always with him for use in emergencies. Scouts salute by raising the first two fingers of the right hand to the forehead. In several schools, scout troops have bands of their own. The scouts render very useful service on great fairs. In short, the Boys Scouts movement proves useful for the suffering humanity. It creates a zeal for service and cooperation among boys and youths.

My Favourite Poet
“Iqbal was a remarkable poet of worldwide fame and his work will live forever. His services to his country and the Muslims are so numerous that his record can be compared with that of the greatest Indian that ever lived”. (Muhammad Ali Jinnah)

Allama Iqbal is our national poet. He was born at Sialkot on November 9, 1877. He belonged to a respectable Kashmiri family. One of his forefathers left Kashmir and settled in Sialkot. His father Sheikh Nur Muhammad was a very pious and religious man. Allama Iqbal inherited mysticism and deep love of his religion from his parents.

Allama Iqbal received his early education from Mission High School, Sialkot and passed Intermediate examination from Murray College. His teacher Molvi Syed Mir Hassan was one of the most learned and pious man of his time. Iqbal had the good fortune of studying Arabic, Persian and lslamiat under the inspiring guidance of his teacher. In one of his poems, he applauded the love affection and care of his teacher bestowed upon him. Then he went to Lahore and passed his M.A examination from Government College, Lahore. He joined the teaching staff of the Govt. College Lahore and served there for some time.

In 1905, he went to Europe for higher studies in Philosophy and Law. He did his Ph.D. in Philosophy from Germany and Bar at-Law from London. He served as a professor of Arabic in London University for six months. His stay in Europe was of great importance. He was not impressed by the Western civilization. He disliked the Western civilization. That is why he criticized it in his poetry. His hatred is quite prominent in his poems. He also predicted that the materialistic civilization of the West is to lead them only towards destruction.

When he returned home, he started law practice in the Lahore High Court. But he was more interested in poetry than law. Most of his time, he devoted to poetry philosophy and religion. He aroused the Muslims through the message of his poetry. In fact, he had great love and sympathy for the Muslims of India. He wanted to help them. He wrote many poems. He asked the Muslims of the whole world to unite.

Iqbal presided over the Allahabad Session of the All-India Muslim League in 1930. Here, he gave us the idea of Pakistan. He said that the only solution of the problems of the Indian Muslims was a separate Muslim State. He preached that slavery was greatest curse. The Muslims should break the chains of slavery. He pointed out the main causes of the degradation and humiliation of the Muslims in his poems "Shikwa" and "Jawab-e-Shikwa".

Allama Muhammad Iqbal was a great poet of Urdu and Persian. He was an inspired and creative poet. He dreamt of a separate homeland for the Muslims of the Sub-Continent. But he could not live long to see his dream materialize in the shape of Pakistan in 1947. He died on the 21st April, 1938. His death was a great loss for the Muslims. He was buried, near the gate of Shahi Masjid. Lahore. Every year Iqbal Day is celebrated to pay him homage. May his soul rest in peace.

He wrote many books such as Bangi-e-Dara, Bal-e-Jabreel, Zarb-e-Kalim, Israr-e-Khudi,
Ramuz-e-Bekhudi, Javaid Nama, etc.

Quaid-e-Azam

"The heights by great men reached and kept were not attained by sudden flights, for they while their companions slept, were toiling upward in the night."

Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah was a unique leader of Indian Muslims. He offered the Muslims and unprecedented leadership. No one before or after him practiced politics as he did. God had treasured up all the supreme qualities of a great leader in him. When the Indian Muslims made up their minds for emancipation, they turned their eyes on Quaid-e-Azam who cut off the fetters of slavery and brought his people. The gift of freedom qualities of a great hero by all standards. In other words, his personality was a beautiful blend of intelligence, determination, faith, morality and valor.

Mohammad Ali Jinnah was born in Karachi on December 25th 1876. He got his early education in a local Maktab. Then he got admission in Missionary High School. After that he made to England for Bar-at-Law. When he was in England, the Muslims besought him to come to India to lead the procession of the freedom fighters to the ultimate goal. The Quaid beat back to India and let the Indian Muslims through fire and water to their destination. The Indian Muslims were placed between fires The English and the Hindus. It was the Quaid who freed them from dual slavery.

He worked as a member of Indian National Congress and later on joined the Muslim League. Then, he made efforts for a separate homeland of the Indian Muslims. He translated two Nations Theory and Iqbal’s dream into reality. The London times wrote:

"The Hindus and the Indian Muslims have no religious dispute. It is speculated with the passage of time, religious superstitions will die out. There are some cultural differences between two nations. The passing time will bridge this gap also."

Such a comment springs from both the parties. British Government and the paper awakened the sleeping lions. The Quaid rose to the occasion and brought both the parts under his severe censure. He said:
"India is neither a country nor it inhabitants a nation. This is a sub-continent where many nations live".

He further said:
"We believe in one God, They believe in many Gods. We don't have cast system, they have cast system. We can't be interned nor interline. How can we live together?"

This sharp minded, hawk eyed, unflinching and unyielding man worked day and night for Pakistan. It was due to his leadership, that the British could not weld the Hindus and the Muslims into one unity.

Life in a Big City

City is one of the most exciting places to live. Life in a big city is a whirl of activities.

"God made the country and man-made the town"

In the city the life is fast and artificial. Daily life is ever too busy, and restless. One has to fight against time and pace cities are the products of civilization.

Life in a big city is an interminable war in different battle fields. All the necessities and comfort of life are available to the city people. Everything is within the reach. Life is full of luxuries and is very mobile.

City has many things to offer from entertainment and convenience. Most advanced medical facilities are available to the city dwellers. There are large numbers of hospitals and clinics in the city. The hospitals have highly qualified staff and the most expensive and advanced equipment. Other than the hospitals, there-are numerous pharmacies and medical stores.

"All great art is born of metropolis"

A large number of jobs are available in the cities. That's why it’s easier to find a job in the city. Very often people from the countryside move to the cities in order to find decent jobs. There are many educational institutions in cities which have a high standard for the students of all levels. In this way acquisition of knowledge is easier and better in cities. Excellent universities are present in cities for higher education which is a big advantage. The people in the cities are well educated. They are more advanced and enlightened than the people who live in the villages. Skilled workers and technicians are in great demand.

"A great city is not to be confounded with a populous one"

The entertainment is the most exciting part about city life. There are many entertainment facilities for everyone. There are lots of theaters, amusement parks, restaurants, shopping malls and stores in the cities. Other than this there are other entertaining venues such as football, cricket stadiums, arenas and clubs in the cities.

"Recreation is not only joy but need of a man"

In spite of this, there are wide roads in the cities with proper signs and signals. There are vast means of transport for the public that have lessened the distances. Necessities of life are easily available and in a variety.

"What is a city, but the people true people are the city"

There is a mad competition of getting material gains in the cities. Everyone is hypnotized by money and Luxuries. There is no place for emotions and sentiments. There is a strong contrast in different areas in the cities. The slum areas are present behind the posh areas. Life in posh areas is a bed of roses while in slum areas it's a bed of thorns.

"In cities life is heaven for the rich and hell for the poor"

The smoky atmosphere and the dirty and insanitary condition of cities because of factories and industries are pitiable. The lack of pure diet and fresh air are the deficiencies of cities. The poisonous and exhaust gases emitted from the vehicles result in health problems.

"Today's city is the most vulnerable social structure ever conceived by man"

Most of the cities are facing the problem of overpopulation. This is resulting in many other problems such as traffic, lack of housing facilities and food. Now, cities have unfortunately become very dangerous and unhealthy places to live. There are higher crime rates in cities which is a threat to everyone. The rush of traffic and heavy vehicles produce a lot of noise pollution. At the peak hours the noise of the passing traffic is so high that one cannot even hear the either.

Everything has some drawback and problems are everywhere but these problems can be solved by honesty, education, awareness and literacy. But still life in city is very colorful and worth enjoying.

A True Muslim

“A true Muslim is one who does not defame or abuses others; but a truly righteous becomes a refuge for mankind, their lives and their properties”. Muhammad (P.B.U.H)

A true Muslim seeks knowledge and acts upon it. He leads a life of diligence, discipline and deep study. He educates his children well and develops them into good citizens. He tries to create a healthy atmosphere in his family. He is always respectful to the elder and kind to the younger. He solves his problems in a very intelligent manner. He tries his best to understand what is happening in the country. He is clean and pure in thought and deeds. There is no difference between his actions and preaching. He is fearless and courageous. He always speaks the truth. He does his duty honestly.

A true Muslim takes great care of the rights of his fellow beings. He does not deceive others. He always speaks gently and politely. He is sincere, true and kind at heart. Consideration for others is the main aim of his life. In short, he proves himself to be what a true Muslim should be.

My House

Home is the place where we are born and live. It is the sweetest place in the world. When we sense danger elsewhere we find safety in our home. When there is joy, we share it with other members of our home. Everybody loves home. For this reason are English poet has written:

"Home, home, sweet home, There is no place like home."

My home is situated in the middle of the village. There are six members in our family. They are my father, mother, grand-father, grand-mother, my sister and I. I am the second and the youngest child of my parents. So, being the youngest member, I enjoy love and affection of all. My father is an advocate. My mother is a teacher. She works in the Primary School in our village. My sister is a student. She reads in Women's College. My grand-mother and grand-father love my parents. I am their favorite grandson.

We live in a thatched house. The house indicates the simplicity of our family. It has mud walls. There are four rooms excluding the drawing room and the kitchen.

My parents share the room adjoining the kitchen. My grand-mother and grand-father share the room near the drawing room. Another room is used as the store room. There is a spacious courtyard. We have also a cowshed with two cows and a little calf.

I respect my parents and old grand-parents. I always obey their commands. My mother and grand-mother do not like to part with me for a moment. When I go to school, my grand-mother accompanies me up to the school. She waits for me at the school gate during the last period.

My mother cooks food for us. As she is a teacher, she prepares food in the morning and preserves it properly for lunch. My sister who stays in the college hostel often comes and helps my mother in her work. I sometimes play interesting jokes with my grand-father and grand-mother.

I am very fond of our garden. I water the flower plants at my leisure. When my grand-father goes to the cowshed, I go with him. I often kiss the little calf. When someone of my home falls ill, I take proper care.

My uncle comes to our family every month. He brings sweets for me. Sometimes the friends of my father come and take dinner here. My father is a good host. On my birthday my mother invites other teachers of her school. They all come and share the joy with us.
All the villagers respect my home. They say that ours is an ideal home.

My Last Day at School
Tears trickle down my cheeks as I remember my last day in my school. It was the day of parting and parting in life is painful. It was the last chapter of the glorious book of my student life. I had been a student in my school for ten years. It was a golden period of my life. But the golden period passed away like a happy dream.

The 15th of February, 2009, was my last day at school. It was a day of mixed joy and sorrow. We were happy because we were going to be free from the strict discipline of the school. We were sad because we were going to part from our teachers and friends.

On that day were given preparatory holidays. No teaching work was done. Our class teachers came as usual to our class. They laid great stress on the importance of revising papers. “It is easier,” said they, “to satisfy the examiner with a few lines written correctly and well, than with pages full of mistakes.”

They also advised us not to be nervous but take the examination with courage. The Headmaster assured us that even during the preparatory holidays we could get our difficulties removed if we wanted to.

The ninth class students had arranged a farewell party on the eve of our departure. We all assembled in the hall. We were served with sweets and tea. Songs were sung and speeches suited to the occasion were made.

The Monitor of the Ninth Class read out the farewell address which was so touching. He referred to our good behaviour and the splendid role played by us in making the school so popular. He sincerely prayed to God for our success in the Board examination.

After this our worthy Headmaster and teachers showered their blessings on us and addressed a few words of wisdom and advice. Those words are still ringing in my ears. One of our friends sang a farewell song which moved everyone to tears.

On behalf of my class I thanked the ninth class friends for the sumptuous party they had given and the fine words they had spoken. I heartily thanked the Headmaster and the teachers for their keen interest in and parental love for us. The occasion was so touching that I could not help shedding tears.

Then we were photographed along with the Headmaster and the teachers. We bade good-bye to one another. Our throats were too choked to utter a word.

Gloom reigned in the school. I took leave of my teachers, asked for their blessings and started for home. My feet faltered. I left the gate, but the school building, seemed to beckon to me.

I threw back a wistful glance. I then consoled myself. I thought I should visit this seat of light and learning once a year. I should pay back my debt to the school by helping it with money.

Days have rolled by since I left the school. Whenever I sit in an idle and thoughtful mood the whole picture of my school is raised before me. I bend my head of respect of my school. Can I ever forget my school? No, never.

Village Life

City and village life both have its own attractions and pleasures. Life in a village may seem tough but it still has its unique charms. Villages are full of natural beauty; Lush green fields, vast plains, flowing streams are seen everywhere. Mother Nature claims, everything. The atmosphere is clean and fresh. There is no contamination and no harmful gases in the air. Thus, life is more peaceful and healthier in villages.

Man's heart away from nature becomes hard.

Pakistan is predominantly a land of villages. A major proportion of Pakistani population resides in villages because agriculture is the main occupation of our people.

A Pakistani village reflects the real picture of Pakistan. A Pakistani village is the very epitome of Pakistani culture and tradition. The village life is made up of farm houses, mud houses, uneven dirt lanes and ponds. Numerous Orchards and gardens of different fruits are found in the village. The streets are usually narrow and made up of dirt. There is fresh and pure food available in the villages which are free from all kinds of impurities.

Villagers lead a simple contended and happy life. They get to eat pure, simple but a healthy diet. They live a happiness of their fellows. The boy who cried wolf and the villages came out to help him

Women, in the villages spend their spare time doing embroidery, decorating their houses, making marvelous handicrafts which entertain them and also provide financial support. There is a temporary school in the village where only a single teacher teaches all the classes. The children sit on the jute mats under the open sky.

The beauty of nature can easily be seen and felt. The day begins with chirping of the birds and with the musical sound of morning wind. Rainy season is the most pleasant. The whole atmosphere looks clear and brilliant. Summer and winter have their own marvels. There is a season of sowing and harvesting crops in which there is a great hustle and bustle. Fairs, festivals and marriages are the special occasions for rejoicing and merry-making. Happiness is what you make it.

"Nothing is good or bad but thinking makes it so"

They spend a lot of time in the fields as their major profession is agriculture. They remain busy in their healthy occupations. In the evening, they sit in the chop pal and talk about different local matters. The farmers take rest during their leisure time under the shady trees. They work from dawn to dusk and earn an honest living.

"Honesty is the best policy. If I lose my honor I lose myself."

In villages "choppal" is the meeting place where elderly people meet in the evening to have their conversation about the local problems. The life is centered around the big land lord who passes most of his time either in talking or in settling village disputes. There are different cultivators in the village such as a blacksmith, a carpenter, a potter, a barber, a weaver, a physician and a not very qualified teacher.

Recreation is not only joy but need of a man

Life in village is not devoid of its amusements. Although there are no cinemas, clubs and recreational places in villages, set one can enjoy long walks in the open fields, valleys and on the banks of rivers. Very amusing and simple games are played in the village which brings pleasure in the lives of the villagers.

"Happiness is what you make it."

The villagers are very lively people. Their liveliness is represented in their songs and stories. Villagers, although poor are not only hospitable and caring but they also like to share the sorrows.

This is only one side of the picture. Villages have their drawbacks too. The people lack new and modern facilities. There are no proper hospitals and medication centers. Due to the lack of quality education, the illiteracy rate is very high. There are no transportation and communication facilities. But rural life can be reformed. With a little attention villages can become the pride of Pakistan and it is hoped that things will change in the near future.

My Hobby
Hobby or Pastime is an activity which a person performs in his spare or leisure time. It is pursued for relaxation and pleasure and not as a main occupation. They bring a feeling of joy and satisfaction to man. Hobbies help us to pass our free time happily as when man has nothing to do. His mind is like devils one.

"Idle Brain is a devil's workshop."

And hobbies make us bury. They add zest to dull and monotonous life. They stimulate the mind and leave an imprint upon character.-Hobbies enhance creativity and develop our skill, refresh our minds. These are a source of recreation for retired people as well.

Hobbies indicate the versatility of the individual. Great men were well known for their hobbies. Samuel Johnson, the famous eighteenth century suit and lexicographer loved cats. George Lewis studied longevity. Gladstone, the Prime Minister of England after dived into Mathematics. Sir James Jeans was fond of music and Sir Winston Churchill was fond of painting.

Hobby also provides us information and helps us to solve many problems. My hobby is book reading. In my opinion, this is the best hobby. It provides us information, gives us relaxation and helps us in passing our spare time joyfully. A person who adopts this hobby, In fact, does not need any friend because.

"Books are our best friends"

I have this hobby since my childhood, when I was quite young, only about six, seven years old. In start, I was very fond of reading colorful story books and charming poems. I had a great collection of story books.
But with passage of time, I stopped reading those books. Now I read all kinds of books, historical books, Islamic books, books on science and technology, novels and poetic books. Books of poetry have their entertainment value. Books of travel take us to unknown lands, peoples and customs.

"Books enlighten our intellect and broaden our vision."

I have a number of books. Mainly I am interested in literacy books. Urdu literature is the most interesting. Poetry also appeals me especially poetry of Iqbal has its own importance. I am also interested in study of books on latest research work in science and technology as they increase our information.

I like my all books. I like most my hobby because it is not only a source of relaxation but also a source of information. Whenever I am alone or have nothing to do, I take out any look and started reading it and my spare time passes joyfully.

In fact, all hobbies make life charming and add to our happiness. They bring us new friends and make us social. But book reading is a great hobby because.
"Books are of greatest importance in our life."

Courtesy

Courtesy means to practice good manners, refined habits and polite behavior. Courtesy, infect springs from good breeding, nobleness of mind and the gentile heart. Courtesy works well in all walks of life. To be more precise, to do one's duty in a consummate manner displays courtesy.

A courteous person is always kind, helpful and tolerant towards others. At home parents should be loving and kind to their offspring. The children should be obedient to their elders. An employer should be caring to his employees, while the employees should be sincere and laborious to their employer. One should be helpful and considerate to his neighbors. A citizen should be law abiding and loyal to his country. A teacher should be humble and sympathetic to his students while they should be respectful and obedient to their teachers. Good netiquettes also demand that we offer our seat to an elderly person while traveling on a bus or a train. We should not jump out of a queue or violate a traffic signal.

The Holy Prophet (SAW) is the paragon of courtesy in the Islamic History. It was the charisma of his sublime morals that transformed a barbarous nation into a civilized one. It means that our courteous acts and polite words can produce wonders. If each one of us acts upon some simple norms of morality, we may form a great nation that can stand distinct and successful in the comity of a nation. Someone has very aptly said:

"Goodness begins from courteous hearts”

A Visit to Historical Place
History is the study of rise and fall of different nations. Great nations learn much from their history and never forget their heroes. People remember their heroes and commemorate the important days to revive their glorious traditions. In the same way we also have wonderful history.

Last month, I went on a trip to Lahore. After the examination, we felt free. Some of my friends came to me and made a programme to visit historical places at Lahore. The next day, I got up early in the morning and started for the railway station after nnecessary preparation. My friends were already waiting for me. We bought tickets and started our journey.

After two hours, our train reached Lahore Railway Station. We were surprised to see such a big train station. We came out of the railway station and hired a taxi for the Tomb of Jahangir. On the way we bought some sweets, fruits and other eatables. When we reached near the bridge of the river Ravi, we decided to enjoy rowing for some time. We hired a boat and a boatman and went far into the river.

After that we reached the Tomb of Jahangir. A large number of people had also come to enjoy there. I felt very happy to see the green lawns, the tall trees growing in lang rows and the beautiful fountains. They were presenting a beautiful scene. We entered the tomb of the late king and offered 'Fatiha'. I was surprised to see the beautiful work and the artistic designs made by the Muslim artisans..

The tomb of Jahangir is located in Shahdara, a suburb of Lahore to the northwest of the city. The area had been a favorite spot of Jahangir and his wife Nur Jahan when they resided in Lahore. When Jahangir died in 1627 he may initially been buries in Shahdara in one of its many gardens. His son, Shah Jahan, ordered that a mausoleum befitting an Emperor be built as a permanent memorial. It occupies a vast quadrangle measuring 600 gaz(approximately 500 meters) to a side and is subdivided into four chahar baghs (four-part gardens). A fountain occupies the center of each of the chahar baghs. Today, the tomb of Jahangir holds special significance or Pakistanis as it is the only Mughal tomb located in present-day Pakistan, and it remains one of Lahore's most popular attractions.

Jahangir;s tomb is the best example of the Mughal architecture. It has been made with an artistic skill. The design of its dome and minarets is attractive for tourist. Tomb of Nur Jahan, Jahangir' wife, is also situated beside Jahangir's tomb.

After some time we came out of the tomb and climbed on one of its lofty towers. We could see the shole city of Lahore. IT was very amusing to see the people walking in streets and the cars moving on the roads. The shining water of the river looked like a reflecting mirror. After that we sat down under the shade of a cool tree and took lunch.

We took pictures of this historical monument. One of my friends had digital camera of latest model. The peaceful atmosphere gave us soothing pleasure.

We remained there and enjoyed that wonderful scene. It was really a memorable day of my life.

 A Cricket Match

Cricket is  very interesting outdoor game. I am very fond of playing cricket. I am fond of watching a really good match. The other day. I went to see a very fine match match between the our college and ABC College. The match was to be played on our college ground. It is lush green with beautiful boundary.

It was a fine day. A large number of people had gathered to witness the cricket match in the college stadium. The captain of the our team won the toss and elected to bat, and the other team took the field.

Players of both teams were very smart, active and energetic. Their athletic bodies reflected the hard-work they had done in gymnasium and on the ground. Our team was dressed in blue while they were in yellow. White ball was used for the first time in the history of local cricket.

The two batsman who went in first were quite good players. One was a good hitter, and punished the ball and all over the field whenever he got it. The other was very careful, and most of the time simply blocked. He did not care for runs, The bowling was strong, and the boy who played a steady game was not able to score at single run for the first fifteen minutes, but the other was securing them rapidly, But he soon paid for it: he was caught out smartly at mid off.

The next four players were dismissed very quickly two bowled.one caught out and one out leg-before wickets. All of us thought that out team would soon be all out. The score stood at fifty. However, the captain made a stand and, with the help of the steady boy who kept in with his blocking, was able to pull up the score to a hundred. The captain played very cautiously but before he could make some more runs, he was run out. The whole team were out for 128 runs.

We felt that our team would lose the match, but the other team did not have such an easy time as we expected. Our team had two very good bowlers one very fast, and the other spinner, and they gave their opponents a very tough time.

The other team made rather a poor start. Their first wicket fell in about ten minutes. when the score was only ten. However, their captain cheered them up made a great stand when he was caught out at 70. Then their wickets began to fall quickly. The game seemed to point to a defeat for the other team. But when their ninth and tenth player came to bat, their hopes revived. they hit and drove one of the fast scores reached a hundred. At the last one fine catch sent one of the fast scorer off the field. But the last man was a daring batsman whose two hits won applause from the crowd. They had now only thirteen runs to make to win the match. They struggle for runs, and great was the joy of the other team when the score stood and 115. But as ill luck would have it. one slow ball tempted the player to hit a six but he was clean bowled. The other team loss the match by five runs only. The spectators gave us standing ovation. Our college flags were fluttering everywhere while we sang and danced.

To conclude, sports are healthy activity to create a healthy society. They are an expression of players' stamina, athleticism, sportsman spirit and self control. Besides, sports are great fun for players as well as spectators. This match was an evidence of such ideals!

"What I know most surely about morality and the duty of man, I owe it to sport." (Albert Camus)

The College Life

The college life is a master blend of happiness, enjoyment greater sense of responsibility and hard work. Pleasure and work go hand in hand. We attend lectures, go to labs, revise at home and prepare for class tests or monthly ones. During a class, a teacher keeps us busy in the lesson, but he has the knack of creating some humour. He does so to relieve us of stress and pressure. Sometimes, we learn that there would be a musical concert right after the exams. That is exciting!

There is a great difference between the college and school life. A school boy has to lead a life full of restrictions, gets up at regular hours, goes to school daily, does the homework on the same day. Whereas, a college student is the master of his own will. He may bunk the class but no one is there to rebuke him. He may commit mistake but no one is there to take notice of it. There is no check on the freedom of the life of a collegiate. This kind of freedom after disciplined life of school keeps a student happy and full of pride.

College life gives freedom of expression. Every student has the right to express himself, both orally and in writing. He listens to his teachers, discusses with classmates and forms his own opinion about a certain topic. He can express his opinion in writing also. Closely related to this, is the freedom of choice. You have the choice of coming and going, studying or bunking, learning or wasting time and money. Some youngsters spoil themselves when they find themselves in such an atmosphere. Although they repent but there is no use to cry over spilt milk.

On the other hand, brilliant students use the freedom very wisely and excel in studies and life. They learn all the lessons, revise them at home and play a game to refresh for further work. They understand the college opportunity and use it as a launching pad to take off in future.

At school level, a student reproduces crammed material. On almost all the topics, he does not have his own opinion. However, at college level text books are not the only source of knowledge but students read other books to expand their horizon.

Mischief, disobedience and indiscipline are some salient features of college life. Although there is fair number of decent students, sometimes mischievous ones outnumber them very easily. Therefore, the general concept of a college student in the past was of an insolent and unruly one. Nowadays the situation is not as bad as it had been.

Speech declamations, quiz competitions, debates and sports are also remarkable features of college life. It can be rightly said about the competitive environment at college. "Iron sharpens iron; scholar, the scholar." They are essential for personality development. Participants learn team spirit, leadership, cooperation, patience and tolerance through such activities. Victory as well as defeat is a great teacher.

In the final analysis, we can say that students learn principles of golden life through trial and error, reading, testing, competitions, social interaction and various sports. The college life is an opportunity for everyone  and he should get maximum out of it. The charms of college life are enjoyable but they can be traps for those who are irresponsible and immature. However, college life is an unforgettable experience, and the one who misses it cannot find an alternative in the rest of life.

A Picnic Party

According to a poet:
"A poor life this if full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare"
The above verse fully epitomize our day to day life. We have become so much busy in daily pursuits that we have stopped enjoying the nature present around us. Picnic are very essential to get a respite in busy life. Everybody needs rest and entertainment after working had for many days. Picnic parties provide us leisure. They add charm to our dull and boring life. They refresh our tires nerves and mind.

Last week the tour organizer of our college decided to take the students  of Intermediate to Jallo Park for a picnic. For this purpose Sunday was fixed, as there was a lot of hustle and bustle at Jallo Park on Sundays. Our class teacher Mr. Asad also agreed to accompany us. The students paid Rs. 300 each for bus charges and light refreshment.

Two buses were arranged for this purpose. Every student was required to take some necessary things with him. All the students reached the college on the appointed day at about 8:00 a.m. The buses also arrived in time. Many students had cameras and tape recorders. All the students were dressed well.

Our trip organizer and the class teacher arrived at exact 8:30 a.m. All the students boarded the buses and we started at 8:45 a.m. When the buses moved the students started singing in a chorus. They clapped  and and danced collectively. Within twenty five minute we reached the spot. It was winter season. Many other institutions had also organized their tours to Jallo Park on that day.

"All things are artificial, for nature is the art of God." (Sir T. Browne)

The scene at Jallo looked just a big fair. There were hundreds of students who had come there to enjoy. We selected a place near the Jallo lake and spreads a big carpet there. We placed our lunch boxes there and went around the park in groups.

At 12:00 p.m. we all came back and assembled for our lunch. We were feeling quite hungry. We opened our lunch packets and shared our meals with one another. After that we started a program of music. Some students gave us good songs and ghazalas. Many other on-lookers also gathered around us and enjoyed the music. Some students entertained us with tit bits and jokes. After this we took some rest and again dispersed.

Those who had cameras started taking photographs. At 3:30 p/m/ we again gathered at the appointed place. Now we were served by our college authorities with tea and biscuits. The time passed quickly. Ultimately we started for our home journey at 5:00 p/m/

An Ideal Student

An ideal student in one who is fully conscious of his duties and responsibilities. He is a ray of hope for the future generations. An ideal student is always a dutiful, responsible and humanitarian. He is a very brilliant student. He may set new record in the college. An ideal student is simple and contended person. He always thinks about his future progress and sets high goal to achieve success in his life. He is fearless and bold person.

"Shout for the moon. Even if you miss. you'll land among the stars". (Brown)

An ideal student is, therefore, well-versed in his courses of study. He is hardworking and intelligent. He is conscientious. The reason is that he is regular in his work. He does not allow his work to pile up. He is attentive in the classroom. He takes notes and improves upon them at home. If there is any difficulty, he consults the teacher without any hesitation. Of course, he does not cram. Nor does he study only from the examination point of view. He, therefore does not fear the examination. An examination offers him an opportunity to show and test his ability.

Apart from studies, a perfect student is interested in many other things. Books are necessary but they are not everything. A good student always takes care of his body along with the brain. So, he is interested in games and sports. He may not be an excellent player of any game but he has enthusiasm for playing. If he cannot play, he at least participates as a spectator. Besides games there are other general activities at a college. He participates in as many of these activities as possible.

"Civility costs nothing and buys everything".

A ideal student's attitude to discipline is worth mentioning. Many students look upon discipline as a check on their freedom. A complete student regards discipline with respect and understanding. With him discipline is not an external force. He disciplines himself. He does not go against the rules of the college.

"Better good manners than good looks"

An ideal student always respects his parents and teachers. He understands how much he owes to his parents. He always takes care of them. He never forgets to look after them when they enter the old age.

"Great ambition is the passion of a great character". (Napoleon)

He is sympathetic and helpful for other students. He shares worries and problems with the members of his family. He takes part in the social problems of the country. Our beloved country. needs such a type of student who has muscles of iron and nerves of steel. Such students alone can help the nation in achieving prosperity for the country.

"Hard work without talent is a shame, but talent without hardwork is a tragedy". (Robert Half)

Life In College Hostel

Hostel is an essential part of a college. Life in a college hostel is full of pleasures and charms, It is usually located with the premises of the college. It provides facilities only to those students whose parents live in remote areas. Hostel life is, undoubtedly, the most enthusiastic time of a students's life. It is definitely a memorable period which cannot be forgotten during the rest of life. It plays a vital role in the development of the personality of the student.

Hostel life provides many facilities to students. In every hostel, there is a reading room containing newspapers and magazines of different kinds. A student can increase his general knowledge by means of this informative material. He can form a habit of reading in a learning atmosphere. Many students learn from each other through the process of pushing and pulling. Senior students help the junior students in their studies.

Similarly, every hostel has a big common room, where students assemble daily in the evening and take part in various indoor games. There are annual games among the hostel students. Different prizes are given to the winners.

Hostel life gives practical training to a student in his mental, moral and spiritual development. He has to follow the rules made by the students themselves. All the students eat and play together at the fixed time. Nobody can leave the hostel without permission of the Superintendent. There hostel life gives practical training, punctuality, regularity and discipline. Hostel life builds self-confidence in a student. The student elect a mess manager every month to decide what to eat and how much to spend.

The most important advantage of hostel life is the opportunity to make new friends. Students belong to different families, having different habits. It also enables them to have a good understanding of different natures and minds. This practical training in human understanding proves very helpful in their practical life.

On the other hand hostel life has certain disadvantages. It is so expensive that most of the parent cannot afford it and refuse to give higher education to their children.

A hostel student cannot enjoy the freedom and privacy which he can have at home. It is true that he is free to spend his time and money in any way he likes but he does not feel at home there. He cannot study or sleep peacefully according to his own will. Since the students are living away from the control of parents, they may waste their time and money.

Another disadvantage of hostel life is that students living away from parental control may join bad company. There are some black sheep also who in different hostels and spoil the innocent students. Some student start smoking and other drugs.

In spite of these disadvantages, the educational advantage of hostel life are greater. Most of the rich parents like to send their children to residential institutions. It is the duty of the student to remain honest towards his studies.

My Aim In Life

"A useless life is an early death"

Every one in the world, however great or small, has some aim in life. A prince may have an aim to be a king and king may have an aim to be an emperor. Some one's aim is for fame, some one's for money, while some aim at acquiring knowledge.

Accordingly I have also a high aim of life, though I do not know how far I would be able to realize it. I do not want to run after money, nor after cheap fame or popularity. My aim in life is to get happiness for myself and also for others. To realize this aim. I have resolved to be a doctor and spend my life in the service of others. My role model is Dr. Ali Hassan who is a paragon of service and contentment. He is a source of vital inspiration for me.

"People never improve unless they look to some standard or example higher than themselves" (Tyron Edwards)

I know that the profession of medicine is a good selection. If I become a good doctor, I will get a lot of money, which I will use for the service of the poor. I will not charge high fees and shall never exploit the needy and the poor at the most critical moments of their life. If I become a good doctor, I will, of course, get fame. Being a good doctor, having connections with several families. I would naturally acquire power and influence, but I would see that I do not abuse my power for any ignoble or undeserving work. In short, I have fixed my aim to be a doctor, not because it is a profession, which would fetch more wealth, fame or power than any other profession, but because it gives better and greater opportunities to serve mankind in their moments of urgent need, when they are involved in a struggle of life and death.

"It matters not how long we live but how". (Bailey)

My aim does not end there. I shall devote a part of my time in doing voluntary work in hospitals and charitable dispensaries. I would also devote a part of my time to the welfare of my country and my people. I would go to politics or any public work to serve my country and play my humble part in the social, political, religious and educational reforms, resulting in the progress of my country.

Whether I succeed or fail in my aim, I shall never make wealth or power the end of my life. I shall never run after the bubble of fame. I shall be proud to die in harness. Success in my profession will be of little importance to me unless it is governed by my higher moral progress. I strongly believe that one must learn to distinguish between 'vulgar' material success and the "true success" of the man who succeeds in obtaining the best both in the material and the spiritual sphere. I want to be one such man who will succeed to attain sufficiency of means and serenity of spiritual satisfaction by my profession.

To conclude, I would like to add that my aim of life fully suits my tendencies and ideas about life. I know in my heart that this is the path best fitted for me by nature and I would leave no stone unturned to attain it.

"The purpose of life should be a life of purpose. (Long Fellow)"

Co-Education

Co-education means the education of boys and girls in the same institution. In every country we have co-education at one age or another. The experiment of co-education has been a success in the West. In Pakistan, we have co-education in primary schools, in colleges and postgraduate classes. In high school, it is not considered advisable to run combined classes.

Many orthodox and religious minded people think that co-education leads to moral corruption. They think that study of the student suffers a set back and the colleges become lovers' meeting places. They still hold the stance that the girls, by keeping company with boys constantly, get de-womanized and become immodest and bolder.

There is little truth in the above argument that cannot be accepted in the world in which we live. Today females cannot be kept under strict control and confined to the four walls of their houses. They have discovered themselves and come into their own. Under these circumstances, it will be insane to shut the doors of colleges otherwise built for boys, to our sisters and daughters who possess the same amount of talent and intelligence as boys claim to have.

It is mistaken to think that co-education will foster lustful and moral corruption. Rather we can say safely that co-education raises the moral as well as the intellectual environment of an institution. The boys begin to behave more gracefully and look decent and well mannered. They will like to appear in their neatest of clothes and act in best of their manners. None like to abuse one another. There is likewise a healthy effect on the girl students. They slowly become more confident and develop soberly beings. In co-education, a sort of healthy competition is seen between boys and girls, which leads to study and finally better results. In short, it is the best teacher of the art of living.

In this poor country, much may be said in favour of co-education. It is economical and accessible to practice co-education in Pakistan. How can we afford to have separate colleges for girls all over the country? It is also not possible to build and equip separate laboratories, medical, engineering and other technical schools for girls. There is an increasing demand for the education of women. Lack of funds, paucity of good teachers, inadequacy of buildings are some of the hurdles that stand in the way of having separate institutions for girls. Co-education is the only alternative to meed this demand.

There are some problems about co-education that should be met. The greatest difficulty is the risk of indiscipline. When young people of both sexes are brought in close contact with each other, there arise some undesirable consequences. But these problems are not impossible to meet. Elders both at home and in institutions can exercise a healthy control on the behavior of their children. The teachers and parents can co-operate to devise some rules to lessen such risks.

We can conclude that co-education may not be a perfect system of education within its sphere. It may sometimes lead to romance and sentimentalism; but that should not scare us. Surely, its advantages are more than its disadvantages. The greatest merit of co-education is that it broadens the outlook of both genders and puts less strain on an economy like us.

Patriotism

“Such is the patriot’s boast, where’er we roam, His first, best country ever is at home.” (Oliver Goldsmith)

Men have always taken pride in loving their countries above everything else. From the ancient times to the modern age, people have been laying their lives for the honour of their ‘motherland’. In short, the love of one’s country has become an accepted virtue among freedom-loving nations.

Patriotism means love and loyalty to one’s country. A true patriot would be willingly die for the honour of his country if there is danger to her freedom. As it is said: Lovely and honourable! It is to die for one’s country. It is one of the most exalted and inspiring experiences. Many a time, even the weaker nations fought so bravely against the aggressors that the whole world was surprised. Thus fought Porus, an ordinary prince, against Alexander the Great. The Greek conqueror was so much impressed by his valour and boldness that he freed him along-with his titles and his country.  We cannot forget or under-estimate the patriotism and determination of Tipu Sultan who fought against the armies of the English and the Maraths. He was a man who was intoxicated with the love of his country and stirred to action by his deep concern for the freedom of the Indians against treacherous rule of the East India company.

Examples can be multiplied to show that before the national interest, all personal interest vanish. This is a sign of healthy attitude. But when the members of a nation neglect the national interests and promote their own, it is a sign of decadence. Before the advent of Kamal Ataturk conditions were such in Turkey. Being a great patriot, he fought against the selfish people and the foreign power and modernized Turkey to make it fit for the respectable people to live in. The patriotism of a nation shows how much life and honour  it has got. Weaker nations always come to see bad times when they lose love for their country.

“I only regret that I have but only one life to lose for my country”. (Nathan Hale)

Patriotism has been called infectious because it usually inspires good and noble deeds. A man who has as much regard for other people’s interests as for his own, will never stoop to evil acts. The Greeks were ideal patriots. Each of them become a soldier when the country was in danger. From this flowed their respect of the freedom of other peoples. The history and literature of all the nations of the world are full of such evidence that shows how citizens of free nations were ennobled by the love of their country.

But patriotism does not confine itself to the defense of the country. True patriotism appears in the times of war and peace alike. When the political and social conditions become bad in the country, patriotism inspires certain noble souls to reform the country. They are snubbed from all sides, but they have the will and determination to reform. Quaid-e-Azam laid great stress upon such a patriotic spirit. Once, addressing the students, he said: “It was duty of all the patriotic Pakistanis to uproot all evil things, and that our country could become respectable and prosperous only if educated people showed a will to reform things.”

It is the responsibility of all educated and sensible people to cultivate and develop a true patriotic spirit which means the readiness to serve one’ country in war and peace. It is a virtue that has its own record. It gives a character of nobility to the personality of a man. One should not think that patriotism means fighting other nations. Its stress is upon doing good to our own country and harm to none.

“Swim or sink, live or die, survive or perish

With my country was my unalterable determination.” (John Adams)

My College Library

“Come, and take choice of all my library,
And so beguile thy sorrow. (Shakespeare)

A big oval-shaped hall, shelves of crystal glass, vertical windows, blinds of blue colour, a long lines of tables with chairs around them, a glass cabin for the librarian, dozens of boys and girls engrossed in reading and complete silence – this is my college library.

The library has been set up in the eastern corner of my college campus to harbor the first rays of dawn and plenty of air. Unlike many other libraries, it is noise resistant. The traffic noise, students playing and shouting outside, even a moderate explosion nearby does not make a reader inside feel disturbed.

The variety of books in the library is astonishing. Contrary to many other college libraries, ours has more than that. Besides a large number of textbooks, there are reference books, magazines, novels, books on poetry and plays, dictionaries of almost all subjects and an audio-visual section. Some research these have also been added for the sake of our interest. The library statistics show that there are 40000 books and 300 audio and video-cassettes. Apart from science subjects, we can read books on history, geography, religion and general knowledge. In short, the collection does not disappoint us.

“A good book is the precios life-blood of a master spirit,
embalmed and treasured up on purpose to a life beyond life.” (Milton)

One day, the librarian spoke about the future plans, He said, “In a hi-tech age of communication, our library will go on-line. You will be able of make a contact with college libraries abroad”, This is marvelous.

Silence is noteworthy in our library, As soon you step in, a pin drop silence strikes you. The readers avoid talking. Either they whisper or they use gestures to communicate. If someone talks, blazing eyes of others taunt him so badly that he feels ashamed of talking. Besides, the floor is thickly carpeted which disallows any noise while walking. Even though a student is not in a mood of reading, the peaceful environment encourages him to read something.

The working of library is simple but accurate. A big catalogue has been arranged in alphabetical order to locate a book. This is according to the principles of library science. Secondly, now there is a computerized system that has quickened the book finding. Books are issued and deposited on library cards, which bear the photograph of a person. Hence, no unauthorized person can have the book. Thirdly, the audio-visual cassettes can be used in library only. A corner has been specified for this purpose.

In the final analysis, books are one’s best friends and a library is the only place where thousands of friends wait for one daily. A purposeful library assists us in attaining our objective. My college library is purpose-oriented and doing great service with a future vision.

My Idea Of Happy Life

“The web of life is mingled yarn, good and ill together.” says Shakespeare.

Now this is quite true of our actual experience of life. We see that man was neither to be entirely happy nor was he made to mourn and be sad always. His life is a strange mixture of joy and sorrow. Pleasure and pain go together. Now withstanding this fact, we have also observed that ideal happiness has never been absent from the thought of philosophers and poets. Since ages, people have been striving hard to achieve total bliss and happiness.

Coming to my own idea of happy life. I would frankly admit that to me, happy life is not very idealistic. It is merely freedom from the petty cares and wants of this material world. I must have enough to support myself independently. There happiness consists in freedom to do as one likes, without being obstructed by poverty or forbidden by authority. That does not mean that I want boundless treasures. Possession of wealth is not conductive to happiness. It rather increases one’s worries and troubles. I should have just enough to meet my normal requirements.

Self-sufficiency in worldly things, being a pre-requisite. We also necessarily require a cheerful spirit and a good conscience to be happy in the real sense of the world. A port wrote:

“The happiness of humankind
Consists in rectitude of mind.”

This is true in all cases. One cannot attain peace of mind unless one has a clear conscience. I believe that unless one attains peace of mind by virtuous living, one cannot dream of leading a happy life.
Again. Life is chiefly measured by the duties performed. If we do all that duty calls us to do; if we do our best in all circumstances; it we do not magnify trifles and try to see things as they are; if we take advantages of the many blessings that surrounds us; if we confide in All Wise Providence, and have thankful hearts. As is rightly remarked;

“The busier you are, the happier you will be.”

Some sort of seclusions is also necessary for a happy life. A man who is entirely absorbed in the affairs of the world and has given himself up to the wild pursuits of life, cannot attain happiness of mind and body. This, however, should not lead you to conclude that by leaving the world altogether I want to become a recluse. A life of complete renunciation does not appeal to ma at all. Tasting all pure enjoyment of body and mind, I also want to avoid hundreds of troubles that vex daily life.
The tendency to laziness makes our lives miserable. I therefore think that in order to attain complete happiness. I must have some ideal to pursue. This would make my work cheerful and also keep me busy. My ideal would be the guiding motive in my life so that I may not only live happily but also usefully. In my pursuit of a particular ideal, I would realize the glories and beauties of heaven and the universe alike, which are own if we chose to have it so. This would also give me the power  over securing eternal peace of triumphing over pain and sorrow. Ideal provides without stint the main requisites of human happiness. It is rightly said that:

“Happiness walks on busy feet.”

I have laid much stress on spiritual rather than physical happiness. But I shall refrain from the wholesome pleasures of the flesh. They also serve their purpose and males man happy. But mental peace and freedom would be the chief source of my happiness. In conclusion, I must say that happiness so secured should not remain my personal possession, it would disseminate to others. I ought to do my best to be happy myself so as to carry sunlight and joy into the hearts of others wherever I go, I shall be pleasantly useful to others.

Why I Love Pakistan

I love Pakistan more than my own life because my existence has no value apart from it. I love it because I owe my life to it. If I have to give reasons for my live of Pakistan, I can say that it commands my love for being the land which begot me and which sustains me. It is not surprising that a person loves his home and family. It is because he is bound to it with ties that are known and felt by every one of us. It is ungrateful to betray one’s benefactor, So, I never think of feeling anything except love for my country.

The culture and civilization of this country are felt in my blood. What I am is very deeply connected with Pakistan and cannot be separated from it as a part of the body cannot be separated from it without bitter pain. The atmosphere around me is the outcome of centuries of development. I am proud of the cultural heritage of Pakistan which sustains me and my country men. If I disown these bonds, nobody can be more ungrateful. As is remarked by someone,

“More deadly than a serpeant’s tooth is an ungrateful child.”

The Romans thought that the greatest moral virtue was to love one’s country. A person who failed to love his country was called a traitor and was punished with death. The Germans in the 20th century defied the whole worlf20th century defied the whole world because they loved their country above anything else and thought that they were worthy of ruling the whole world. Intoxicated with this idea, they proved to be the most powerful nation of the world. Their unity was without and stain. It proves that love of one’s country gives new personal strength and faith in a higher ideal which lies behind all human progress. This land which is mostly inhabited by the Muslims is a source of inspiration to me.

There is still another reason for my love of Pakistan. Since the decline of the Muslim rule in Indo-Pakistan the Muslims had a very hard time. With the efforts of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, his friends and followers, the Muslims of this country realized their condition Then under the inspiring leadership of the Quaid-e-Azam, they fought for the creation of Pakistan. Pakistan came into being on August 1947 for which we had to give great sacrifices. Millions of people lost their lives and homes. Such a dearly bought prize cannot be neglected. My love has immense depth for this reason too.

We love Pakistan not because it has imposing and beautiful buildings, or it has vast tracts of fertile land and gardens, or it abounds with fine places of natural scenery. All these things are possessed by other countries of the world, perhaps in a better measure and on a grander scale. We love Pakistan because of its men. Men in the real sense of the word make or unmake nations. The wealth, ammunition and landed property do not constitute a nation. Pakistanis are good at heart; they are straight-forward and sincere. They are generous and hospitable. They consider life worth living. They are honest, reliable and trustworthy. Fair in their dealings, upright in their act as, dauntless in their undertakings. They are worthy of our love.

In the end, I should say that I love Pakistan because it is fountain of my life, safety and honour. To have no lover for it means to have no love for my own self.

 Pollution

Pollution means contamination of Earth's environment with materials that interfere with human health, the quality of life, or natural functioning of ecosystems (living organisms and their natural surroundings). Although some environment pollution is a result of natural causes such as volcanic eruptions, yet most is caused by human activities. People are exploiting the nature in many ways and creating pollution everywhere. Mankind today appears like a foolish man who is wielding, an axe at the branch of the tree on which he is sitting.

Pollution exists in many forms and affects many different aspects of Earth's environment. Much pollution comes from specific, localized and identifiable sources, such as sewage pipelines, or industrial smokestacks. Another kind of pollution comes from dispersed or uncontaminated sources, such as contaminated water runoff from urban or automobiles emissions.

Human contamination of Earth's atmosphere can take many forms and has existed since human first began use fire for agriculture, heating and cooking. It can be seen in the indiscriminate cultivation of land, destruction of forests and in the annihilation of active species. Man's voracity has upset the balance of nature. Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's need, but not for every man's greed". Urban air pollution is commonly known as smog ( a form of air pollution by the photochemical reaction of sunlight with hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides that have been released into the atmosphere, especially by automotive emissions). Air Pollution has developed into a major health hazard in the modern time. As pollutants build up in atmosphere, sulfur and nitrogen oxides are converted into acids that mix with rain. This acid rain falls in lakes and on forests, where it can lead to death of fish and plants, and damage entire ecosystems. Eventually, the contaminated lakes and forests may become lifeless.

One of the greatest challenges caused by air pollution is Global Warming, an increase in Earth's atmosphere due to the buildup of certain gases such as carbon dioxide. With the heavy use of the fossil fuels in the modern era, atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide have risen dramatically. Carbon dioxide and other gases, known as green house gases, reduce the escape of heat from the plant and block the radiation coming from the sun. The average global temperature are expected to rise because of this green house effect and it would make the Earth warmer, change climate patterns, affect crop production, disrupt wildlife distributions and raise the sea level.

Sewage, industrial wastes, and agriculture chemicals such as fertilizers and pesticides are the main causes of water pollution. In developing nations, more than 95 percent of urban sewage is discharged untreated into rivers and bays, creating a major health hazard. Water runoff, a major source of pollution, carries fertilizing chemicals such as phosphates and nitrates from agricultural fields and yards into lakes, streams and rivers. The water body may then become choked with decaying algae, which severely depletes the oxygen supply. It causes the death of fish and other aquatic life.

Erosion, the wearing away of topsoil by wind and rain, also contributes to water pollution. Soil and silt ( a fine sediment) washed from logged hillsides, plowed fields, or construction sites, can clog waterways and kill aquatic vegetation.

Soil is a mixture of mineral, plant and animal materials that forms during a long process that may take thousands of years. It is necessary for most plant growth and is essential for all agricultural production. Soil Pollution is a buildup of toxic chemical compounds, salts, pathogens (disease-causing organism) or radioactive materials that can affect plant and animal life. The massive use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides in poisoning the natural processes occurring within the soil and destroying the useful organisms such as bacteria, fungi and other microorganisms.

Unwanted sounds, or noise, such as that produced by airplanes, traffic or industrial machinery is considered a form of pollution. Noise pollution is at its worst in densely populated areas. It can cause hearing loss, stress, high blood pressure, sleep loss, distraction and lost productivity. Noise pollution can be overcome by adding insulation and sound proofing to doors, walls and ceilings, and also by using air protection, particularly in industrial working areas.

The problem of pollution and other environmental hazards calls for the immediate measures to save the future generations from the devastating predicament of pollution. We must maintain and establish a beneficial relationship with the rest of the nature. So that we may not pollute the Earth's atmosphere to such an extent that deformed humans are only left to enjoy the prospects on the industrial and technological progress. We must acknowledge the sanctity of Earth, because while the Earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease,

Computer

When Pascal invented computer in 1642 he did not know that it was a dawn of revolution. It was a simple machine of calculations, almost as big as a room. Somehow it could not attract the attention of other scientists or people. Hence, no valuable progress could be made. However, in last thirty years or so computer has become a part and parcel of human life. Its excessive use suggests that our life is "e-life" now.

Computer consists of three major parts i.e. input media, output media and a central processing unit (CPU). Input media is in the form of a keyboard. Output media is like a television monitor which shows the results of CPU. CPU is the main component which calculates or processes the desired information. Computer is just like human brain. When we remember something, a visual or a related thing emerges on the screen of mind. Likewise, we ask computer to 'remember' something which is lying in its memory. It does so and shows the result on the screen of output media.

In this age of information technology, computer is man's real friend in order to store, manage, process and transmit information. Huge piles of registers can be compressed in a small memory card of a computer. From home to our office, from bank to our business and from bus terminal to airport computer serves us like an obedient servant. So much so, our national defence systems are also computer - operated. Atom bombs and missile batteries are controlled and operated by computer.

On the other hand, any technical fault in computer can being life to a stand still. This is the biggest drawback of its excessive use and dependence on it. Sometimes banking operations or transactions halt, flights delay or internet communications suspends. This may result in financial loss also. What if our defence system does not riggers, on account of computer fault? It seems to be a NIGHTMARE!

Secondly, its excessive use has made people introvert. They used to go out, play games, meet friends and others in parties, in functions or in festivals. However, now they are computer and internet "addict". Similar adverse effect has been observed on book reading. Students do not dign time for library visit because they are preoccupied with computer.

Thirdly, the rise of computer has widened the gap between haves and have-nots. The deprived sections of society cannot benefit from computer, Whereas the haves not only enjoy it but also get maximum out of it. In short, the have nots feel that they have been denied the luxury of computer.

In the final analysis, the future of computer is bright. We will not have to wait for a long time, when everyone enjoys its use. Man may find an answer to its drawbacks one day. People would adopt a balanced approach while using it. They would no longer be introvert or its addict. Our young ones would find it a kind assistant during their education and training. These days are not far off!

Uses And Abuses Of Mobile Phone

Freeman Dyson says: "Technology is a gift of God. After the gift of life, it is perhaps the greatest of God's gift. It is the mother of civilizations, of arts and of sciences."

John Milton was of the view that attitude of someone made a thing good or bad. The thing in itself is not either good or bad. Ever since the dawn of the era of scientific inventions, the scientific gadgets have been under debate whether they are good or bad. Cellular phones are being discussed by various sections of society. The fact of the matter is that mobile phones have both sides of the picture.

Mobile phones are just one piece of evidence that the world is, in fact, a global village. Unlike land lines, mobile phones do not put restrictions on users to stay at home or in the office etc. You are free to roam about with your cellular phone in your pocket. It implies that where ever you are, you are always in contact with the rest of the world, there is no chance of either losing someone or getting out of sight.

Since communications moves the world of business, cellular phones are great help in this connection. Businessmen around the globe carry sophisticated cellular phones to remain in contact with their offices. They are going back in their offices and manage business activities by mere mobile calls. Business executives also want to stay in contact with their customers. In order to enjoy the confidence of their clients or customers, business executives would like to have the assistance of cellular phones. This is simply magical!

Mobile phones are very useful in emergency situations. Excellent public administration or maintenance of law and order requires consistent watch. If there is any danger of law and order being disrupted, mobile phone can convey timely information to public administrators and help avert tragedies. Nowadays, a number of districts have greater areas and population. There are different sections of society with their particular attitudes and aspirations therefore, public administrators need to be vigilant and rapid in their moves. Cellular phones is one technological solution.

Today, mobile phones are not merely communication devices, they are used as laptops also. This is because of technological  advancement. Business administrators, engineers and other experts use mobile sets for data management. Young children find mobile sets useful as entertainment devices. They are fond of music, movies, and games.

On the other hand, mobile phones have some abuses also. As it is said: Excess of everything is bad.

Students can spoil themselves by indulging in the pleasures of mobile phones. They are fond of chatting, music and video clips etc. young children can fall prey to such luxuries very easily. They waste their precious time in using mobile phone for excessive entertainment. Certainly, this is neither appreciable nor desirable.

Besides, terrorists have used mobile phones for exploding planted bombs. This has proved to be a big abuse of cellular phones. Instead of communication of information, a mobile phone set becomes a sophisticated weapon in the hands of a terrorist. Many precious lives have been ruined by them.

Finally, it may be hoped that, with better counseling, young generation shall use mobile phones for positive and appreciable purposes. Students shall use it for constructive purposes in their educational career. One can be optimistic that one day terrorism will be uprooted. Then, cellular phones will not be used for disrupting law and order and killing innocent people.

 Terrorism

"Terrorism is the tactic of demanding the impossible and demanding it at gunpoint"

Terrorism means the use of force or aggression against a person, group or government. The aims of such a destructive activity are to create fear and alarm in the masses. Terrorism is not a modern activity. It has been going on in the in the world for a very long time. In the past the societies were not organized. However, in the old world, the robbers and dacoits waylaid people during their journey and robbed them of their belongings and deprived the weak of their life but now the terrorist activity has changed it. It has become and organized activity.

In the modern age, terrorist groups have emerged which train for life destruction activities. Now a day, the terrorist organizations are financially helped and aided by the secret services of different governments. The hostile neighbours train the terrorist and send them for the destructive activities. They create dread and alarm in the people and try to destabilize the government.

"The war on the terrorism can not be won"

A regular terrorist organization usually works against the government. Its main object is to create disorder and anarchy in the country. The forces of law and order are weakened. The government cannot pay proper attention to build the nation and look after the welfare of its people. Most of their attention is diverted to curb the terrorists. Now a day, a terrorist use modern destructive weapons to destroy the buildings, offices and public places like railway stations and airports. They implant bomb and cause a great loss to public property and life.

Terrorists acts committed for various reasons. Some terrorist groups support a particular philosophy. Other terrorist organizations fight against the government to get liberation on the ethnic basis. Dictators use violence to frighten or eliminate their opponents.

In Pakistan, the terrorist activities go on in a planned and organized manner. The reasons for their activities are quite obvious. The terrorists in Pakistan create violence, commit murder, implant bombs at public places, kidnap people for ransom due to the following reasons:-

In Pakistan, certain group kill one another on the basis of religious differences. They are financially backed and aided by foreign countries and anti-Pakistan secret services like RAW.
The terrorist activities are committed in certain parts of Pakistan on the basis of linguistic or ethnic differences. There are political organizations which are established on the ethnic or linguistic basis. They murder, kill or kidnap people from the rival or apposite groups.
India has always tried to destabilize political and economic stability of Pakistan. Its secret services RAW disrupts the normal life of the country through its agents. They create anarchy in the country by blasting bombs at different public places.

"A war against terrorism is and impracticable through conception if it means fighting terrorism with terrorism"

During the last many years, Pakistan has become favorite place for terrorist to execute their destructive activities. In the preceding year, the mosques, Imam Bargahs, the places of worship and religious centers had been the special targets of the terrorists. The last few years, innocent men, women and children were killed. During year 1998, more than 1700 citizens killed in Karachi. The terrorist activities seem to have become the routine matter in the country.

Terrorism needs t be checked carefully. And the government should force all the people to leave the country who are illegally present. It should make arrangements to stop the illegal flow of arms and money into the country from abroad. All the secret services of Pakistan should work jointly.

"The fight against terrorism is terrorism"

My Neighbour

Happy is the man who has good neighbour. I am such a happy man. I have the best relations with my next-door neighbours on both sides. There has never been any trouble between us. Our life has been smooth and peaceful. We have lived in harmony for years.

I have many neighbours, but the best among them is Mr. Mehdi who lives on my right. Never was there a better man. He is always polite and courteous. I have never found him exchanging a harsh word with anybody. He is the father of a happy family of three children. His wife is an equally excellent lady. They both work as a fine team, and the influence of this is clearly visible on the children.

Most of the quarrels between neighbours are caused on account of their children. The children of my neighbours are nor quarrelsome. Still, sometimes we do have a little rift between their children and ours. After all, children will have their quarrels. But my neighbour never allows these quarrels to grow. Even if our children are at fault, he would admonish his own children rather than ours. Of course, he is gentle with his children on such occasions. But he never finds fault with our children. The result is that we also look more to the faults of our children that of his.

My neighbour is full of sympathy for everyone. He has always been helpful to me. Whenever I have had any trouble, he has come to help me without my asking for it.

My neighbour is not petty-minded. If he does a good turn to me, he never shows it off. He never mentions it. He never even hints how good he has been to me. He does not expect any thanks or gratitude.  He feels embarrassed if I thank him with feeling. But we understand each other well. He also knows that I would never keep back from giving him any help if I can.

My neighbour has a jolly way of spending life. I have never found my neighbour Glum or Gloomy. He is never annoyed. He is always full of cheerfulness and good humour. I may drop in at any time and I will never find him cold. He has a very keen sense of humour. He has many jokes which would amuse me. If there is some unpleasantness in the family, he restores good humour by some delightful remark.

My neighbour is a man of active and industrious habits. He works hard for his children .He is employed in an office, and he does not have a big income. But he knows the best way of making use of what he has. In short, I am thankful to God for having such a good man as my neighbour.

Discipline

Social life is possible only if members of a society respect the wishes of one another. There would be no human society, if every man acted as he wished. Our personal actions and dealings with others are regulated by certain rules of conduct. Man's willing obedience to the laws of morality, and of justice is the basis of human society.

True human happiness depends on this submission of the individual to laws of conduct. The difference between right and wrong, proper and improper, good and bad is as essential difference. Our ideals of right and wrong. etc., may change from age to age, from society to society, but a difference between right and wrong always exist.

A properly brought up child is taught early to obey laws of conduct. We educate him to know right from wrong. We tell him what to do and what not to do. The best way of discipline is not by preaching long lecturers delivered again and again. These lectures do not make our children better men and women. Our own example and our own practice are the best teachers for our children. They do what they see us do. A child is a born imitator and hero-worshiper. Early in life he chooses his hero, and imitates him. So the best discipline for a child is through training and example. Fear of punishment may keep him away form doing wrong, but it will not make him choose or do right.

Discipline is usually associated with physical aspect of life. But it is more of mental than of body. The progress of human thoughts depends on it. Every man cannot have what he wants. He must discipline himself to think that his personal happiness is not the first concern of mankind. He must learn to curb those desires which come in conflict with the desires of the rest of mankind.

But true discipline does not come from force. We have said that the fear of punishment does not teach a child to obey rationally. Military discipline according to which every soldier acts like a machine even though his conduct is not due to fear of punishment is not the highest form of discipline. When men obey willingly and with pleasures, they may be said to be properly disciplined. But in order that it may be so our laws should be reasonable and just.

In an ideal state of society, no one rules; all men obey. There are no governors, only a government. Men obey because they have that highest form of discipline called self-discipline. Self-discipline is the essential quality which should be achieved through struggle.

Examinations

Examinations means a test of capacity of knowledge. It is a thing that a student hates most. He usually compares the examination to a nightmare. Examinations may be a pleasure for a few students but are a necessity for an average student and boring for a majority of them.

Examinations have the following uses. First, they serve as a test of efficiency. It is only by giving an examination that we know what progress the student has made during a period. Examinations supply us a solid proof of the fitness of a student for the higher class. A university degree or diploma shows that a particular student has acquired knowledge of a fixed standard. Thus an employer can safely entrust a job to the degree holder after examining the degree.

In the absence of examinations and degrees, we shall be at a loss to find out a man whose efficiency is tested. Secondly, examinations are test of ability and help us make a difference between the scholar and the dullard. They help us find out the ablest candidate out of a group of many. To fill all higher services, examinations are conducted by the Public Service Commission, and the top candidates are selected to fill the vacancies.

Firstly, the examination make us to study properly. It is the fear of examination that makes us work. Many careless students become serious near the examination. They try to be systematic are regular. No body would have cared to work if there were no examinations. Thus examinations are the most effective way of inspiring a student to read.

But examinations have their darker aspects as well. First, they shatter the blooming health of young students. They sit up late in the night to prepare for the examinations. A number of them fall ill. They lose their peace of mind. From this point of view, examinations are a curse.

Secondly, the examinations encourage the very bad habit of cramming. They are a test of memory rather than of intelligence or knowledge. Good marks or mere success in the examination is looked upon as the only test of true knowledge. Students read help books to get good marks and neglect the prescribed books.

Thirdly, the examinations are no sure test of one's ability. Chance plays a great part in all examinations. Intelligent students may fail and dullard may pass. Many eminent persons of the world are not holders of high academic degrees.

A Religious Festival

Eid-ul-Fitar is one of the most important festivals of the Muslims. This festival is celebrated on the first of Shawal according to Hijri Calendar. It is an occasion of great rejoicing. Actually Eid-ul-Fitar is celebrated to thank God for His mercy and kindness that has enabled us to observe the fasts of Ramzan. That if why Eid falls just after the month of Ramzan. As every Muslim is expected to give Fitrana (alms) before going out for prayers on this day, the festival is named as Eid-ul-Fitar.
As Eid-ul-Fitar is a special occasion for thanks giving and merry making, preparations for this festival start about a fortnight before the actual date. There is special shopping in the bazaars and the shops are well decorated for this purpose. Every  Muslim wants to wear his best dress on Eid.
As soon as the Eid moon is sighted, the rejoicings start. The children are very happy because they get special gifts and pocket money on this occasion. On the Eid days, every Muslim starts his preparation early in the morning. The male members of the family change their dress and go to 'Eidgah' to offer Eid prayers.
The women of the house sweep and dust the house in the best way and decorate it beautifully. Then they prepare the finest food they can afford. On Eid there is invariably a dish of 'Sevian' the traditional food prepared with vermicelli and milk.
After Eid prayers the people embrace and exchange Eid greetings with one another. When they return from the Eidgah, they also greet their family members with joy and give 'Eidi' to young ones. Friends and relatives go to one another's houses to greet. There are swings and toys for children at every corner of the street. Young people too have various kinds of happy activities.
Eid is very fine festival. It carries with it the religious sobriety mixed with rejoicings. Almost all the festivals of the Muslims have this quality. They are festivals with religious sanctity. Unlike the festivals of other religions. Muslim festivals are free from all kinds of immoral customs as drinking and gambling etc. Islam teaches us to remain within moral limits on the occasion of merry-making and festivities. Eid is the best festival of the year.

Books

One of the most delightful things about a good book is, I think, its companionship. While we are able to enjoy good books, we are surrounded by an imaginary world which is peopled with good and noble characters, who let us share their inmost thoughts.
Books are, indeed the only means we have of entering into the thoughts of the great men of all ages. While we commune with them, we are for the moment lifted up to something of the same height as that on which they stand, and we see the prospectus beneath with their eyes. What are real and vital stands out sharp and clear, what is false and trivial is lost. Nor is the good we get from reading transitory. We read some noble thoughts, ponder on them, and find them true. They become also our own, a possession, none can take away form us; for they mould our characters, and enter into our every being.
Book on history make us realize how people lived in past ages, how they built up their constitution and laws. Biographers of great men are very valuable, especially when they do not dwell too much on unimportant facts, but let us see something of the inner lives of persons described.
Good novels, whatever may be said to the contrary, are of very real use in widening our sympathies. While we read a novel, we lose our own personality in that of the hero or heroine, and we feel emotions as we go through experiences which we may never in our own lives. Novels enable us to enter more sympathetically into the feelings of others. In Milton’s noble words, “A good book is the precious lifeblood of a master spirit, embalmed and treasured up to a life beyond life”.
But after all, the power of a book has some limitations. No two persons will read Shakespeare alike. One will understand more than the other, neither will understand more than what is already in some degree in him. A book cannot create faculties in a man, nor can it give him any fresh qualities. No man ever became a genius by sheer force of reading. There must be some affinity between two minds, or they will never understand one another.

Finally, we may say that the chief end of a book is to awaken and develop those good qualities which might otherwise have remained dormant in a man forever.

Qualities Of A Good Citizen

Citizen means full membership in a country. The word Citizenship comes from the Latin word ”Civitas”, meaning citizens “United in a community”. Citizenship is still sometimes used for membership in some smaller unit of government, such as a state, province or city.
A person who holds the legal position of citizenship is called a citizen. A country grants certain rights to its citizens and demands certain duties from them.
A country offers its citizens protection when they are at home. A country and its citizens are not really separate. A country exists only when the people of a certain areas are organized politically. Not all persons living under the same flag are citizens; Persons who are not citizens may be either aliens or non-citizen nationals. ‘Aliens’ are persons from other countries who have not become citizens of their new countries. “Non-Citizen Nationals” are persons who are not citizens of a country, but owe allegiance to it. The government protects them, but they do not have the full privileges of citizens.
Rights and Duties
Citizenship involves both civic and political rights, as well as civic and political duties. The constitution of the country guarantees “civic rights” to all its citizens. A person possesses civic rights, such as the rights to worship or pray as he pleases, from the day he is born. In return for these rights, each citizen owes allegiance to his country. It is his “civic duty” to support his government, obey its laws, and defend his country.

Only citizens have full political rights (the right to take part in the government). These rights have some limitations. A citizen under 18 years is not eligible to vote. Besides he should establish a permanent residence in order to vote. These restrictions in no way lessen the citizen’s civic and political duty to help elect officers of his government when he becomes eligible to vote.
Citizens can carry out their civic responsibilities in many ways besides voting. They can shape public opinion by using their freedom of speech and expressing their views on important issues. Young men may be called on to serve in the armed forces. Adults may serve on juries, become school board members or work for the political party of their choice.
Democratic government fails unless citizen show the same eagerness to serve their country that they expect the country to show in serving them. Schools train the citizen to accept their responsibilities.
Most schools have civic education programmes that emphasize citizenship activities. Students study current affairs. Pakistan history and Pakistan studies. They work together on projects to study such problems as environmental pollution.
Many private and public organizations promote citizenship education. They help citizens to get information about their government and encourage them to take part in the government. Many organizations train young women on how a government operates.
In fact a state is known by its citizens. The state is an abstract idea whereas its citizens are concrete and tangible living beings. The citizens should take all those steps to improve the image of the country in the world.

My Pleasure Trip

John Keats said, " A thing of beauty is a joy forever".
Last year in summer vacation, I went to Quetta on a pleasure trip with my college friends. It was a nice trip which I shall never forget.

As it was very hot season, we decided to travel by a night train from Lahore. For about an hour  we had a joyful journey. As there was not much of sight seeing, we found pleasure in conversation which was mixed with jokes, songs and laughter.
Gradually our compartment because became over-crowded, and the atmosphere seemed to grow a bit dull. But to our joy, two travelers made it lively by their humorous talk. After some time we went to sleep.
Next morning, we got up just in time and the train arrived at Machh station. We disembarked from it and went to the bus station to reserve our seats. At this time, I had a glimpse of Bolan Mountains which were majestically bathing in the rays of the rising sun.
After some time our upward journey began. Our bus went on smoothly on the zigzag road and we were extremely pleased to see the beauty of the charming valleys which we passed by. It took about an hour to reach our destination, but it was an hour full of joy.
After reaching Quetta, we made necessary arrangements for our stay in a hotel. Then we went to Bolan Pass near Shahi Fountain. It looked so nice and sweet that I gazed and gazed at it. On reaching its shore, we plunged into its cool water and swam in it for about fifteen minutes.
In the afternoon, we went to a small but decent bazaar, and from there we went to Sun-Set Point. There were hundreds of people like us who had come there to see the glory of the setting sun. The sight of the setting sun was simply marvelous. Even today, it is fresh in my memory.
Next day, we had a long walk round Bolan Pass. This gave us new strength and spirit. In the afternoon we went to Ziarat. It is on a great height from which we had a good view of Bolan Mountains. From there we went to Chaman where some beautiful mosques are situated. The carvings on their walls and ceilings are exquisite in beauty and symmetrical design. These mosques are a rich treasure of inimitable art and my eyes feasted on their beauty to their fill.

On the third day, we made a programme for going to Zahidan which is at a distance of forty miles from Quetta. On the way, we made friendship with a few scouts who were also going there. On reaching our destination, we had breakfast. After that we went to a mosque, which is perhaps on the highest peak of Bolan Pass. From it we saw the wonderful valley and peaks of the mountains. There is a point called Quetta Point from which we had a glimpse of Quetta.
On getting information about some caves in the vicinity, we decided to see them. Two caves which we visited in the beginning did not impress us much. But the cave near Machh is a nice one.
Next day was the last day of our stay at Bolan Mountains. Hence in the morning we visited some minor points and in the evening we did boating in Chashma Shahi.
Thus our five days' stay at Bolan Mountains was over and we came down. On the same day we caught a train and reached home.
It was a memorable pleasure trip full of joy and adventure. It was a holiday from the humdrum of life and to forget our little worries of life. Certainly, I shall never forget those five days of heavenly bliss.

Some Wonders Of Modern Science

“Every great advance in science has issued from a new audacity of imagination” (John Dewey)
The present age is the age of science and much of our happiness depends on how man uses the immense power of science. We cannot imagine living without certain inventions and discoveries of science. These things have made life very comfortable and worth-living. Think of electricity, the aeroplane, internet, telephone, wireless, railways, motorcars, modern drugs which have become indispensable for modern man. Science has also given man a scientific outlook which is much important because without it, man cannot make progress.

In the past, journeys and travels took much time. Now those days are gone. The fast moving trains and airplanes are there to help us. The world has shrunk. Telephone, telegraph, internet, mobile phone and the Wireless flash the news across the world in a moment. Through satellites, the people of one country can see television programmes of the other distant countries. The trains, the automobiles and the aircrafts, which have shortened time and distance, are the blessings of science. In any emergency, help can be immediately arranged from different parts of the world within a very short time. In short, we are living in a global village. It can ne aptly said.
“Art is I, science is we.”
On great discovery, which has added greatly to the joy and comfort of life, is electricity. Electric machines have largely supplanted manual labour and are producing better necessities of life in general abundance and at a much lower cost of production. Electricity works our fans, light, our houses, cooks our food and does all the things one had ever imagined. If it stops for a day, life becomes static. Not only, the life of a person but the existence of a country largely depends upon its power production mainly electricity.
Nature is indifferent rather; it sometimes becomes hostile to man. It is too vast and fearful to be controlled by man. It is science which tames nature for the benefit of man. Science has played an important role in the production of food. Due to fertilizers and modern machinery, such as tractors, carbine, thresher and tube-well engine, the production of crops has gine very high. Science has come to the rescue of the poor countries that face the problems of food shortage. Now the famines break out very rarely. Medicines to kill harmful insects in fields have been invented. Engineers have built dams on rivers to provide canals with water for irrigation.
One of the greatest breakthrough was made in the field of medical science. Surgery has made tremendous progress and has worked wonders. It is now possible to operate upon heart and even replace it. Operations of eye, ear and nose are very common. It has also done miracles in the world of medicines for diseases. Vaccination has made small-pox a thing of the past. Many other diseases like cholera, plague and T.B. have been fully controlled. In the field of medicine, science has also made amazing drugs and instruments. Light X-ray machines have been made which can be carried where no heavy machinery can go. We have better chances of living longer than our fore fathers.

In short, science is the very breath of the modern world. Not a single field of human activity is without the function of science. We are indebted to science for modern comforts of life. It has given power and confidence to man and has proved a good servant to mankind. Without science, the world would not ne what it is. There would be no democracy, no idea of large scale co-operation between different countries, no thought of world government. The food that we eat today cannot be prepared in sufficient quantities. Factories cannot cope with the demand for the things that the people need. Infact , without science, life in the modern world would be impossible.

The Advantages And Drawbacks Of City Life

“God made the country, and man made the town”. (William Cowper)
In comparing city and country life, those who are city dwellers tend to idealize country life. It is held to be a peaceful and trouble-free existence. “far from the maddening crowd”. But the experience of a village often shows that this is not quite a true picture. In a city, one has an excellent service of shops and markets from which one can purchase all the things necessary for life.
There are fine schools for the education of the young, as well as colleges and night classes. The majority of large cities have now a drainage system, as well as carefully purified water supply. Anti-malarial measures have removed the mosquitoes, so that the city-dweller has neither fever from mosquito bites nor dysentery, from contaminated water. There are good medical officers and hospitals, so in practice, a city-dweller is much better looked after that his village cousin.

On the social side, there are theatres, cinemas, lectures and entertainment of all kinds. Even the poorest man can take part in the show that a city arranges to keep its citizens amused and occupied till late hours. In fact, this is often carried too far, and home life suffers because of the modern craze for entertainment. But, on the whole, there is a brightness and sparkle in the life of the city-people.
Medical facilities are available to the people in a city. The government and the city district administration run a number of dispensaries, hospitals and maternity homes. Large hospitals have facilities for major operations and blood transfusion. In addition to these, there are other clinics run by private practitioners and specialists.
In a city, people have better educational provisions. There are many institutions for both professional and non-professional education starting from the primary till post-graduate level. So, it is natural that the city dwellers are better educated. They are analytical and enlightened than the people living in villages. They are also more prosperous for they are well-groomed and trained, and there are better and greater opportunities of employment. There are government offices, multi-national companies, private offices and factories in a city.
There is, of course, another side to the picture. It can be pointed out that what we have described is rather an ideal city, and that the facilities we have described are mainly available to the well-to-do classes. It is true that in most cities even in this enlightened age, there are slums in which people are huddled together in poverty and want. This is one of the evils which have followed everywhere in the wake of industry and it is one of the challenges for our leaders and reformers. The air of the city is often polluted by the smoke of factories and the fume: from petrol-driven motor-cars. The dust and the noise of traffic in the bust streets is a real drawback and many nervous ailments of the present day can be ascribed to the continuous noise of city life.
“The city is not a concrete jungle, it is a human zoo.” (D. Morris)

For the well-to-do and residents in the suburban districts, city life can be a very fine existence. For the poor workers in their slums, it is quite another matter, and so we can hardly give an unqualified decision for or against city life.

The Advantages And Drawbacks Of Rural / Village Life

“God made the country, and man made the town”. (William Cowper)
Writers especially poets, have always tended to glorify the life of Nature. It cannot be denied that there are many benefits of rural life. A villager wakes to breathe the fresh air from the fields, instead of the stale city odours. He gets vegetables and fruit fresh from the fields instead of the withered from a stall in the market. His work in the fields is health-giving and his sleep at night is deep and untroubled by noise.
During the hours of day, the beauty of natural scenery sooths and gladdens his mind. Instead of the clamour of the rickshaws and the hooting of motor-cars, he hears the songs of the birds in the trees and the gentle murmur of the breeze. The saying “God made the country, but man made the town” shows that the excellent influence of rural surroundings has not been overlooked. For rest, peace and tranquility, there is nothing to equal a life in the heart of nature.
The villagers are hard workers. Men and women both work together in the fields. Their life is a life of struggle and contentment. Therefore, they are free from certain nervous and body disorders plaguing the cities.
The villagers are dependent upon climate and rains. A good timely monsoon means prosperity and happiness. But the failure of crops owing to lack of rain means ruin and devastation. But this does not dampen their spirits. Our folk songs and tales show the bravery and exuberance of the rural dwellers. The gusto and excitement with which they celebrate religious and seasonal festivals shows their zest for life. They are closely related to one another and share one another’s joys and sorrows.
“The poetry of the Earth is never dead”. (Keats)

But there is another side to the question. Since rural teachers are badly paid, there have been either no schools or very poor ones in villages. For the same reason, the only medical men are quacks, if indeed there are any. There may be no hospital within hundreds of miles. Often there is no form of amusement at all, unless the villagers organize some simple drama or circus on one of the religious festivals. The village water supply, drawn from well, is mostly pure but sometimes it becomes contaminated by manure from the fields or other sources. Green scum-covered pools breed mosquitoes, and there are no municipal services either to eliminate this danger or to educate the villagers about the danger of mosquitoes and the malaria they bring. So, instead of enjoying the ideal health which the poets imagine, the village people often suffer from dysentery, malaria, and a number of other ailments.
On the whole, the villagers are contented with their lot. Pakistan lives and will have to live mainly in the villages for all time to come. The integrity of the villagers must be preserved at all costs. To conclude, a master plan for rural development and construction has long been overdue. They are an important part of our culture and they must not be ignored.
